To take RAW photos, enable RAW in your phone’s camera settings—or use a compatible camera app—then make sure RAW is switched on in the viewfinder before you shoot. On supported iPhones, the feature is called Apple ProRAW; on Android, availability and menus depend on the device and camera app. RAW files are usually DNGs that you’ll need to edit in compatible software, and they take more storage than JPEG or HEIF.
What RAW means for phone photography
A RAW file preserves more image information for editing than a compressed JPEG or HEIF. That can give you more latitude to adjust exposure, color, and white balance, but it does not automatically make the finished photo look better. RAW is most useful when you plan to edit the image afterward, and its larger files can fill storage faster.
Phone RAW is not always an untouched sensor dump. Apple describes standard RAW as minimally processed sensor data, while Apple ProRAW combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing, including computational methods such as Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, and Night mode on supported devices. The distinction matters: ProRAW retains editing flexibility while incorporating processing that a conventional RAW file may not.

How to take RAW photos on an iPhone
Turn on Apple ProRAW
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Enable Apple ProRAW or ProRAW & Resolution Control, depending on your model and iOS version.
- Open the Camera app and turn on RAW in the viewfinder before taking the photo.
Apple documents ProRAW on iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models with iOS 14.3 or later. Menu names and available options vary by model and software version. If you want the camera to retain your RAW selection between sessions, check Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings for the RAW option.
Choose resolution and check restrictions
On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple documents 12-megapixel and 48-megapixel ProRAW options. Apple estimates a 12 MP ProRAW image at about 25 MB and a 48 MP image at about 75 MB; actual file sizes can vary. Apple says ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG, and 48 MP files are larger still.

The 48 MP option is available only with the main camera at 1x in Apple’s documented guidance. Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos are limited to 12 MP. ProRAW is not available with Live Photos, Portrait mode, or video. Check the resolution and mode shown in the Camera app before an important shot. How to take RAW photos on Android
Android does not have one universal RAW setting or camera menu. Android’s Camera2 API defines a RAW capability that compatible devices can expose to apps, including the ability to provide RAW_SENSOR data and DNG-related metadata. That capability does not guarantee that every phone’s stock camera app provides a RAW toggle.

- Check your phone’s camera settings or manual for RAW, Pro, or DNG.
- If the stock camera does not offer RAW, check whether your phone supports a manufacturer camera app with RAW capture.
- Take a test photo, then inspect its details or open it in a compatible editor to confirm that it saved as RAW/DNG.
Android’s Camera2 capability reference describes what compatible devices can expose to apps; the phone maker’s documentation is the more useful guide to the controls available on your specific model.
Samsung Expert RAW
Samsung’s Canada support page, updated March 17, 2026, says Expert RAW is available for Galaxy S20 or later models, with local and model variation. The app saves both JPEG and RAW Linear DNG 16-bit files and offers controls for ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus. It also documents astrophotography and exposure-time settings; when taking more than 10 shots in succession, capture intervals may lengthen because of high-resolution processing. How to open and edit a phone RAW file
RAW photos commonly use the DNG format, but an editor must support the particular file and its variant. Apple says ProRAW DNGs can be edited in Photos or in compatible third-party apps. Samsung describes post-editing its Linear DNG files. Adobe maintains a Camera Raw supported-camera and DNG list; check compatibility against your editor’s current version and the file from your phone.
- Import or open the DNG in a compatible photo editor.
- Adjust the image—often exposure, white balance, and color—until it looks right.
- Export a rendered JPEG or HEIF when you need a file that is easy to share; keep the original DNG if you may want to edit it again later.
A DNG is an editing source, not necessarily the most convenient format for sharing or viewing everywhere. If the file will not open, check that the app supports your phone’s DNG variant and update the editor before concluding that the image is damaged.

A quick checklist before shooting RAW
- Confirm RAW support for your exact phone model and camera app.
- Turn RAW on in settings and verify the viewfinder indicator before shooting.
- Check lens, resolution, and capture-mode limits; RAW may be unavailable or restricted in some modes.
- Make sure you have room for larger files, especially at high resolution.
- Plan to edit the DNG in compatible software, then export a rendered copy for sharing if needed.
