Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo track a specific button in Google Analytics 4 (GA4), create an event that fires when the button is clicked. You can do this with a GA4 Event tag and click trigger in Google Tag Manager (GTM), or by sending a custom event with gtag.js. GA4’s Enhanced Measurement records certain outbound link clicks automatically, but it does not automatically track every button.
Choose a tracking method
Use GTM if you want to configure the event and click conditions in a tag-management interface. Use gtag.js if your site’s code directly handles analytics events. In either case, connect the event to the actual button interaction; creating an event definition alone does not make it fire.
| Method | What you configure | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Google Tag Manager | A GA4 Event tag and a click trigger with conditions for the target button. | You manage analytics tags in GTM and want to preview the setup before publishing. |
| gtag.js | A call to gtag('event', ...) in the button’s click handling code. |
Your site implements analytics events directly in code. |
Track a button with Google Tag Manager
-
In your GTM container, create a GA4 Event tag. Set its event name to something descriptive, such as
button_click, and add parameters if they will help distinguish the interaction. -
Create a click trigger for the tag. Choose All Elements for a button or another page element. Use Just Links only when tracking HTML anchor elements such as
<a>links. Google explains the trigger types in its Click trigger documentation.Recommended Free Tools

-
Use GTM Preview to open the site and click the button. Check that the trigger matches and the GA4 Event tag fires. Google documents this workflow in Set up Google Analytics in Tag Manager.

Track a button with gtag.js
Send a custom event from the button’s click handler. Google’s example has this shape:
gtag('event', 'button_click', {
button_name: 'newsletter_signup',
screen_name: 'Home'
});
Place the event code below the Google tag snippet. Google says event data placed above that snippet will not be processed. The event call must also run as a result of the specific button click; adding the call elsewhere on the page will not track that interaction. See Google’s button-click setup example.

Choose an event name and parameters
Before creating a custom event, check whether an automatically collected or recommended event already describes the interaction. Google recommends using an existing event when it fits, because predefined events populate corresponding dimensions and metrics. If none fits, create a custom event with a clear name and useful parameters. Google’s custom events guidance covers event setup.
- Use a descriptive name. Event names are case sensitive, must start with a letter, cannot be reserved names, and must contain fewer than 40 characters.
- Add context with parameters. A parameter such as
button_namecan distinguish different buttons that send the same event name. Choose values that describe the interaction without including sensitive details.
For example, button_click can be paired with button_name: 'newsletter_signup'. Use consistent naming and parameter values across pages so the resulting data can be compared.

Verify the event in Google Analytics
After implementing the event, confirm that GA4 receives it. For GTM, first check the tag in Preview, then verify collection in Analytics. Once collected, custom events appear in the Analytics Events report, where you can inspect event counts and details. Google describes event reporting and configuration in its custom events documentation.
If the event is intended to represent an important business outcome, you can mark it as a key event. A button click is not automatically a conversion: classify it according to what your measurement goals define as important.
What Enhanced Measurement tracks automatically
GA4 Enhanced Measurement documents a click event for links that lead away from the current domain. That coverage is for outbound link clicks, not arbitrary buttons. If the action you need to measure is a button interaction, set up a custom event or a suitable existing event rather than assuming Enhanced Measurement will record it. See Google’s Enhanced measurement events documentation.
Protect visitor privacy
Do not send personally identifiable information in event names, parameter values, or other analytics data. Google’s Enhanced Measurement guidance warns against collecting personally identifiable information. Also note that custom parameters may require custom dimensions to be available in reports; Google explains the relevant reporting setup in its custom events documentation.
