Before buying a gaming laptop, match its exact CPU and GPU to the games, resolution, graphics settings, and frame rates you want. Then check whether the screen, GPU power, memory, storage, cooling, ports, and portability suit that plan. Laptop specifications can differ by configuration and region, so verify the exact model number or SKU rather than relying on a product-family name.

1. Start with the games and performance you want

Make a short list of the games you plan to play and set a realistic target for each: resolution, graphics quality, and desired frame rate. A laptop that works well for esports at 1080p may not deliver the same experience in a demanding game at a higher resolution with ray tracing enabled.

Compare the exact laptop CPU and GPU with each game’s recommended requirements and model-specific benchmarks. Component names alone do not establish performance: cooling, GPU power limits, and the laptop’s configuration matter too. Intel recommends checking that the CPU and GPU can sustain the frame rates needed for the chosen display resolution. Intel’s gaming-laptop guide explains this selection principle.

2. Check the GPU, VRAM, and power limit

Match graphics capability to resolution and settings

The GPU does most of the work in many games. Higher resolutions increase its workload, while effects such as ray tracing can make a game more demanding. VRAM needs also vary with the specific game, resolution, and graphics settings, so do not treat one memory figure as a universal minimum. Look for benchmarks of the games and settings you care about, especially if ray tracing is important.

Compare laptop GPU power, not just the GPU name

Laptop GPUs with similar names can perform differently when their power limits differ. Check the manufacturer’s stated GPU power or total graphics power (TGP) for the exact configuration, then look for testing of that laptop model. For example, ASUS lists up to an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with a maximum 175W TGP for a configuration of the ROG Strix G16 (2026). That is a specification for that product configuration, not a performance target or guarantee for other laptops.

3. Choose a screen the laptop can drive

Compare screen resolution, refresh rate, size, and panel type together. A higher refresh rate can make motion look smoother, particularly in competitive games, but the laptop needs to render enough frames to take advantage of it. A higher-resolution screen can show more detail while placing more load on the GPU.

OLED panels can offer deeper blacks and stronger contrast than typical LCD panels, but check the precise panel in the SKU you are considering. Product families may include multiple screen configurations. If you expect to use an external monitor, confirm that the laptop’s GPU and ports support that display at its intended resolution and refresh rate.

4. Set memory and storage for your workload

RAM: account for multitasking

ASUS and Dell describe 16GB as a reasonable starting point for gaming alone, and 32GB as useful for streaming, content creation, or heavier multitasking. These are recommendations, not guarantees for every game or workload. Check how memory is arranged, whether it is soldered or replaceable, and the maximum supported capacity for the exact SKU. ASUS’s buying guide and Dell’s U.S. 2026 guide discuss these memory considerations.

SSD: estimate the space your library needs

Think about how many games you want installed at once and check both the included SSD capacity and the laptop’s expansion options. Dell notes that many modern games require more than 100GB, though that does not apply to every title. ASUS describes 1TB as a more comfortable starting point for a growing game library. Treat that as buying guidance, not a fixed requirement: the right capacity depends on your installed games and other files.

Before checkout, verify the number of storage slots, which slot is occupied, and what upgrades the specific configuration supports. A model-family page may describe options that are not included in the laptop a seller is offering.

5. Look for sustained performance, not just peak claims

Cooling affects whether a laptop can maintain CPU and GPU performance during long gaming sessions. If temperatures become too high, thermal throttling can reduce performance. A larger chassis may allow more room for cooling, but size or a manufacturer’s cooling label alone does not prove how a specific laptop performs.

If fan noise, temperatures, or sustained frame rates matter to you, look for independent testing of the precise model and configuration. Results from another laptop with the same GPU name may not apply if its power limit or cooling design differs.

6. Balance performance with portability and battery use

A larger, performance-focused laptop may be a sensible choice if it will usually stay on a desk. If you travel often, compare weight and dimensions as well as how the laptop behaves on battery. Battery capacity alone does not establish gaming runtime; check model-specific reviews under conditions relevant to your use.

7. Check ports, keyboard, and external displays

List the devices you expect to connect—such as a mouse, headset, controller, storage drive, or monitor—and confirm the exact ports and their functions. Check external-display support and whether USB-C charging is available if you need it; a USB-C connector does not by itself establish that every charging or display feature is supported.

Try the keyboard layout and, if you expect to use it, the trackpad. Intel’s guide recommends accounting for peripherals and high-speed ports when selecting a gaming laptop. The number and function of ports can vary between configurations, so inspect the specification for the exact model.

8. Compare laptops on the same terms

For a useful comparison, use the same game, resolution, graphics settings, and target frame rate for each candidate. Then compare the factors that can change the experience or the practical fit:

  • Performance: GPU model and VRAM, stated laptop GPU power or TGP, CPU, and model-specific benchmark results.
  • Display: resolution, refresh rate, size, and panel type, considered alongside the games and GPU.
  • Sustained use: cooling and independent results for temperatures, noise, or throttling, when available.
  • Upgrades: RAM capacity and layout, whether memory is replaceable, SSD capacity, and storage expansion.
  • Everyday fit: weight, dimensions, battery behavior, ports, keyboard, and trackpad.
  • Purchase terms: total price in your market, warranty, return window, and service options. Confirm current terms with the seller.

9. Verify the exact configuration before checkout

Product-family names can cover several configurations, and regional versions may differ. ASUS specifically notes that actual configurations can vary by region and SKU. Before paying, confirm the details on the seller’s listing or manufacturer’s page:

  • Exact CPU and GPU, including the stated GPU power limit where available.
  • Screen resolution, refresh rate, size, and panel type.
  • Installed RAM, memory layout, and upgrade support.
  • SSD capacity, slot count, and supported storage upgrades.
  • Operating system and included accessories, if relevant.
  • Warranty, return terms, and local service availability.

Warranty and return terms depend on the seller and your location, so check those directly rather than assuming they are the same across listings.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
