Anatomy and comparison with other fossils help identify the organism; geological context and suitable dating methods estimate its age. A fossil is not necessarily dated directly, and every age estimate has uncertainty.
How do scientists identify a hominin fossil?
Identification begins with the fossil’s anatomy and comparison with other known fossils. Researchers also consider where it was found and what else was preserved nearby, such as other fossils or artifacts. These lines of evidence help determine whether remains belong to a hominin and, when the evidence permits, which group or species they represent.
Preservation sets limits. A fragment may not preserve enough evidence for a confident species-level identification, and a single feature should not be treated as decisive. DNA can clarify relationships when it survives, but it is not required for identification and is not preserved in every ancient fossil. The American Museum of Natural History describes DNA fragments recovered from several Neanderthal fossils and explains that preservation is not universal: DNA: A Record of Our Past.
How do scientists establish a fossil’s age?
Dating usually combines evidence about a fossil’s position in a geological sequence with measurements on suitable materials. The result may be a relative order, an estimated age in years, or an interval constrained by dates from materials above and below the fossil-bearing layer. The method must fit the material and the site; age estimates include uncertainty.

Stratigraphy: what the layers say
In an undisturbed sedimentary sequence, lower layers are generally older than the layers above them. A fossil’s position can therefore show which remains are earlier or later without providing a calendar age. Geologists must account for disturbance, such as layers being tilted, folded, or displaced.
Researchers can extend a sequence by correlating layers between locations. Index fossils—species that were widespread but existed for a relatively limited time—can help match layers. Magnetic polarity patterns and the chemical fingerprint of volcanic ash can provide additional correlations.
Biostratigraphy: comparing fossils in the same layer
Biostratigraphy estimates an age by comparing the fossil species found in a layer with their known time ranges. The Smithsonian Institution’s Human Origins Program gives Lucy as an example: three extinct pig species found in the same layer indicated an interval of 3.5–2.9 million years. Later absolute-dating advances placed Lucy at about 3.18 million years. The first figure is a layer-based interval; the later figure is an approximate age for the skeleton.

Paleomagnetism: reading ancient magnetic reversals
Iron-bearing materials can preserve the direction of Earth’s magnetic field when they form. Because the field has reversed polarity over geological time, scientists compare the preserved pattern with the known sequence of reversals. A run of magnetic patterns through several layers is generally more informative than a reading from one layer alone.
Tephrochronology: matching volcanic ash
Volcanic ash can contain glass with a chemical composition distinctive to an eruption. If ash from the same eruption is identified at different sites, those layers can be correlated. Where a fossil-bearing deposit is bracketed by datable ash layers above and below, the dates constrain an age interval for the deposit rather than directly dating the fossil.
Radiometric dating: measuring radioactive decay
Radiometric methods estimate age by measuring radioactive decay in material containing the relevant isotopes. The sample must suit the method. At many East African human-origins sites, potassium-argon and argon-argon dating are important for volcanic materials such as tuff associated with fossil-bearing layers. Such measurements commonly date the surrounding geological material, not the fossil itself. The American Museum of Natural History explains how method choice depends on the material and age: Different Techniques for Dating Fossils.

Other techniques—including electron spin resonance, amino-acid racemization, and obsidian hydration—apply to particular materials and questions. They are not interchangeable clocks that work for every fossil or site. The Smithsonian Human Origins Program outlines these methods and their uses in its Dating overview.
Why carbon-14 is not a universal fossil clock
Carbon-14 dating applies to once-living material and is chiefly useful for relatively recent remains; it cannot date the millions-of-years-old fossils central to much of human evolution. The National Institute of Standards and Technology gives carbon-14 an approximate half-life of 5,730 years. NIST says the method has been used to date bones and other objects about 60,000 years old, and sometimes older—this is not a strict cutoff: How Do You Know the Age of Fossils and Other Old Things?.

A date is only as direct as the material measured and the relationship between that material and the fossil. When scientists date a volcanic layer above or below a fossil, for example, they use its position to bound the fossil-bearing deposit’s age. When they correlate a layer using fossils, magnetic patterns, or ash chemistry, they establish a relationship to another known sequence. Neither result should be mistaken for a direct measurement of the fossil’s age.

- Direct date: measures the fossil itself, when its material is suitable for the method.
All numerical estimates have uncertainty. The method, sample material, geological context, and possible disturbance or contamination affect how precisely an age can be stated.
Why age and identity must be assessed separately
Dating answers when a fossil or its surrounding layer belongs in the past; biological identification answers what organism left the remains. Geological age can help place a specimen in evolutionary context, but an age alone does not identify its species. Conversely, an anatomical identification does not supply a calendar date. Scientists build the strongest account by evaluating both questions with their distinct evidence.
