To make an image with Meta Muse, open Meta AI, describe the image you want, and refine the result with follow-up prompts. To edit a photo, upload it in a new chat and say exactly what you want changed—and what should stay the same. Muse Image is the model; Meta AI is the consumer app and website where most people use it.
What are Meta Muse Image and Meta AI?
Muse Image is Meta’s image-generation and editing model. It can create images from text, edit an existing image, work with reference images, and refine results across multiple turns. Meta AI is the consumer assistant and interface through which users access those capabilities. Meta also offers a separate Meta Model API for developers; you do not need it for the consumer workflow below. Meta’s Muse announcement describes the model’s capabilities and consumer surfaces.
This guide covers image creation and editing, not Meta’s broader Muse agent or the separately described Muse Video preview.
How to create an image with Meta AI
- Open Meta AI. Use the Meta AI app or go to meta.ai, where available. Image features may also appear in Instagram Stories or WhatsApp depending on your location and rollout.
- Describe the image. Include the main subject, setting, visual style, and details that matter. For example: “A small sailboat crossing a quiet lake at sunrise, viewed from the shore, soft watercolor style, muted blue and peach colors.”
- Review the result. Check important details such as the subject, composition, colors, and any text in the image.
- Refine it with a follow-up prompt. Ask for a specific adjustment, such as “Make the sky warmer and keep the boat and shoreline unchanged.” The documented workflow supports continuing a conversation, though controls can vary across Meta AI surfaces.
Specific requests make it easier to judge whether the result matches your intent. If a detail matters, name it directly rather than relying on a broad instruction such as “make it better.”

How to edit a photo with Meta AI
- Start a new chat in Meta AI.
- Upload the photo you want to change.
- Write a prompt that identifies the edit. Say what to add, remove, replace, or restyle. If other parts should remain as they are, state that too.
- Inspect the edited image and ask for a targeted correction if needed.
Meta’s consumer guide describes uploading a photo and writing a prompt to edit it. Examples of supported edit types include removing or adding objects, changing a background, changing a style, and editing a selected area. Meta’s photo-editing guide provides the consumer instructions.
Prompt examples
- Remove an object: “Remove the person in the red shirt from the left side of the image and fill in the background naturally.”
- Add an object: “Add a golden retriever sitting next to me on the bench, matching the lighting and shadows to the rest of the photo.”
- Change the background: Name the new setting and say whether the person or main subject should remain unchanged.
- Edit one area: Identify the exact object or area to change, then specify what should remain intact.
These are prompt patterns, not guaranteed outcomes. Review the result for unwanted changes, especially when the edit involves a person, a detailed background, or an area close to something that should not change.

How to get more reliable results
- Make the change concrete. Name the item to remove or add and its location in the image.
- Describe how an addition should fit. For example, request matching lighting and shadows so a new object belongs in the scene.
- Protect important details. Say what should stay unchanged when you request a background or local edit.
- Use follow-up prompts for corrections. Adjust one important detail at a time so you can see what changed.
- Check text carefully. Keep requested labels or wording short, and inspect spelling and numbers. Meta’s developer guide says exact text rendering varies between runs.
- Use references for consistency. For a recurring character or a series of related images, use reference images where available and preserve approved results rather than regenerating them. Meta notes that multi-image compositions can rearrange input layouts.
Meta describes the model as non-deterministic: repeated calls may not produce identical results. It also says output is high quality up to 1600 pixels. Treat that as Meta’s description of the system, not a guarantee that every image will have the same quality or exact dimensions. Meta’s developer article discusses output behavior and limitations.
Where Meta Muse image features are available
Access depends on the product surface, country, language, and rollout. Meta’s Muse launch announcement described availability in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, in Instagram Stories in the United States, and in WhatsApp in limited countries at launch. Meta’s consumer page says image generation is available in more than 200 countries, while noting that some features are limited to select countries and languages and may roll out gradually. Those statements cover different scopes; availability of image generation in a country does not mean every editing feature is available on every app there.

If you do not see image generation or photo editing, check Meta AI on another supported surface and consult Meta’s current availability and photo-editing information. Availability can change over time.
Is Meta Muse free to use?
Meta describes image generation through its consumer experience as a built-in feature that is free to use. This is separate from the developer API, which has its own pricing. Meta’s developer article dated August 25, 2026 lists $0.01 per image for the Meta Model API; that is a dated API price, not a charge for ordinary consumer use. Check Meta’s developer information for current API terms.

What to know about image provenance and safety
Meta says images made with Muse Image in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai carry Content Seal, an invisible provenance signal intended to remain intact after cropping, compression, resizing, or screenshots. Meta also says it is previewing a tool to check whether an image carries that signal. This claim applies to the named Meta AI surfaces; it does not establish that every image, edit, or image from every Meta product can be detected.
Meta also describes content policies and prompt filtering as safety measures. These do not guarantee that an image is accurate, appropriate for every use, or cleared for your intended rights or licensing needs.

Using Muse Image as a developer
If you are building an application rather than making images in Meta AI, Meta documents access through the Meta Model API. Its options include the conversational Responses API for generation, editing, and multi-turn refinement, or the one-shot /v1/images/generations and /v1/images/edits endpoints. The API can accept text and optional image references. This developer route is separate from the consumer app and website.
