Before holding USDS, distinguish S&P Global Ratings’ Stablecoin Stability Assessment for USDS/DAI from its credit rating for Sky Protocol. The latest assessment listing in the cited material shows a score of 4 (constrained), dated December 8, 2025; S&P separately assigned Sky Protocol a B- issuer credit rating with a stable outlook on August 7, 2025. Neither is a guarantee that USDS will stay at $1 or that you can always redeem it at par. Check the latest rating action and protocol disclosures before relying on either figure.
First identify what the rating actually covers
S&P uses two different products that can appear relevant to USDS. They answer different questions and use different scales, so the grades are not interchangeable.

S&P says its stability assessment can be adjusted downward from the assessment of the backing assets after weighing other strengths and weaknesses. Read the SSA framework and assumptions alongside the specific assessment, rather than treating the number as a complete risk summary.
Read the current assessment and its date
S&P’s assessment listing reports USDS/DAI at 4 (constrained), dated December 8, 2025. The separate Sky Protocol issuer rating is B-, stable outlook, dated August 7, 2025. Because ratings and assessments can change, use the current S&P stablecoin listing and the latest linked report when making a decision; do not assume either dated action remains current.

When you open a rating, verify four things before interpreting it:
- Rated subject: Is it USDS/DAI, a stablecoin instrument, its backing assets, or Sky Protocol as an issuer?
- Product and scale: Is it an SSA score or a credit rating? A 4 on the SSA scale is not comparable to B-.
- Publication date and action: Check whether a newer assessment, outlook change, or other rating action has superseded it.
- Definition and scope: Read what the agency means by peg stability or default, and which types of loss or volatility are outside the measure.
Use the rationale as a risk checklist
S&P’s framework points to several areas to examine in the report and in current protocol disclosures. They are related, but one strong area does not cancel out a weakness elsewhere.

Backing assets and collateral cushion
Check the credit, market-value and custody risks of the backing assets. Examine collateral concentration and how much value could be lost before liabilities are no longer adequately covered. Look for the collateralization requirements, liquidation process and any reserve fund that could absorb losses; assess how these mechanisms might perform in a sharp market move.
Governance and legal framework
Identify who can change collateral types, limits, or other risk parameters, how decisions are approved, and whether concentrated influence could delay action. Also consider legal and regulatory uncertainty: which rules may apply, and how enforceable claims and obligations are described.

Redemption, liquidity and exit routes
Find the actual route you would use to exit USDS. A protocol conversion mechanism, a market sale and a direct dollar redemption are not necessarily the same thing. Note the assets and counterparties each route depends on, any capacity or governance limits, and whether secondary-market depth could shrink under stress.
S&P’s August 2025 announcement described Sky’s peg-support mechanism as an exchange with USDC, not a commitment by Sky to redeem USDS directly in U.S. dollars. That distinction matters when determining what your own exit depends on; consult the issuer-rating announcement for the agency’s stated analysis.

Technology, third parties and operating history
Consider smart-contract, oracle, custody, bridge and other dependencies relevant to the way USDS is issued and transferred. Review incidents, losses, peg behavior and performance during stressed conditions, not just normal operations. In its August 2025 analysis, S&P called cyber risk low-probability but potentially high-severity, and said audits, bug bounties and the protocol’s breach track record partly mitigated that risk in its view.

S&P identified high depositor concentration, governance during a transition period and reliance on the founder, regulatory uncertainty for decentralized protocols, and weak risk-adjusted capitalization as weaknesses. It cited limited credit losses since 2020 and modest earnings as partial offsets. These are the agency’s observations in its August 7, 2025 issuer-rating action, not a live evaluation of current conditions.

The announcement reported a 0.4% risk-adjusted capital ratio as of July 27, 2025. That is a dated input to S&P’s rating analysis, not a current balance-sheet metric. Do not compare it with a current protocol dashboard value as if both were measured on the same basis or date.
Check protocol disclosures and current data
Sky describes USDS as a decentralized stablecoin and an upgrade of DAI, soft-pegged to the U.S. dollar and backed by collateral. Its disclosure says governance sets collateral types, limits and minimum collateralization ratios. Sky directs users to public financial and onchain dashboards for collateral backing, financial records, activity and token state. These are protocol statements and time-sensitive data, so verify current values directly rather than treating a product description as independent confirmation. Sky also warns of smart-contract vulnerabilities, market volatility, failed transactions and possible loss of funds.
Sky describes sUSDS as a separate yield-bearing token; USDS itself is the underlying stablecoin. A stability or issuer rating for USDS or Sky does not, by itself, assess the merits or risks of holding sUSDS.
A Sky Frontier Foundation summary of Q1 2026 reported $13.03 billion in protocol collateral, $11.70 billion in USDS supply and $46.04 million in net protocol surplus. It also described a $150 million target for Sky Reserves following a governance-approved restructuring on March 14, 2026. These are publisher-reported figures, not an independent rating opinion; the reserve amount is a target, not evidence that the full amount had been accumulated. The Foundation says its site content is not official protocol documentation and does not represent Sky Protocol’s views. See the Q1 2026 report summary for its figures and qualifications.
Compare ratings carefully before deciding
If you compare USDS with another stablecoin, compare the same type of assessment over a similar date range and across the same dimensions. Do not compare an SSA peg score directly with an issuer credit grade, and do not treat any single score as a substitute for checking collateral, conversion routes, governance and technology dependencies. A rating is one input to a holding decision, not a promise about price, liquidity or recoveries in every scenario.
