Check your handheld’s exact model before buying a microSD card. The slot determines which card types, capacities, and speed interfaces work; guidance for another handheld does not establish compatibility with yours. Then choose enough capacity for the games you want installed, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for formatting and setup.
What microSD card do you need for a gaming handheld?
There is no universal card specification for Android gaming handhelds. Look up the device maker’s documentation for your exact model and confirm three things before shopping:
- Card family and interface: whether the reader supports microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC, or another format, and whether it uses UHS-I, UHS-II, or a different interface.
- Maximum capacity: the largest card the manufacturer says the device supports.
- Speed requirement or recommendation: any stated speed class or bus marking, and whether that wording describes a minimum or a recommendation.
These are separate checks: a card may have enough capacity but use an unsupported format or interface. Do not assume Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, or ASUS ROG Ally specifications apply to an Android device.
How much storage should you get?
Estimate capacity from the games you expect to keep installed at the same time, plus any other data you plan to store on the card. Check game sizes and your device’s available internal storage, then choose a card that fits your library while staying within the handheld’s stated capacity limit.

There is no single ideal size without knowing both your model’s limit and your installed-game needs. Also check what the device allows on removable storage: storage rules can distinguish games and media from saves or other system data.
How to read card types and speed markings
Card family, bus interface, and speed class describe different aspects of compatibility and performance. Match the markings required by your handheld’s documentation; a higher advertised number alone does not prove that the device supports the card’s interface or that games will load faster.

Official guidance varies across devices. Nintendo recommends UHS-I cards for the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, and lists 60–95 MB/s as its high-speed recommendation. Valve says Steam Deck supports UHS-I and SD, SDXC, and SDHC; Steam Support says UHS-I class 3 or better cards are supported. ASUS says the ROG Ally has a UHS-II or backward-compatible reader. These examples explain why checking the exact model matters; they are not Android handheld specifications.
Advertised sequential transfer speeds are not the same as a measured game-loading result. The cited manufacturer guidance establishes compatibility recommendations, not that one card brand or speed rating will produce a particular loading-time improvement.

Does a faster microSD card make games load faster?
Not necessarily. The sources cited here do not provide controlled comparisons of game-loading times across card brands or speeds. A faster card’s advertised peak sequential speed does not establish how much faster a particular game will load, especially if the handheld cannot use the card’s full interface speed.
Use the device maker’s supported or recommended speed marking as your compatibility baseline. Treat claims about actual game-loading gains as unverified unless they come from a relevant test of your device and the specific cards being compared.

Formatting, game installs, and save data
Use the handheld’s own setup instructions rather than applying a universal filesystem rule. The manufacturer should specify whether to format the card in the device, which filesystem to use, and whether the card is portable or adoptable storage. Formatting can erase existing data, so back up anything you need before proceeding.
Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch examples
- Steam Deck: Valve says the Deck formats microSD cards to ext4 with casefolding through its built-in formatting flow. This is Steam Deck-specific guidance, not a filesystem recommendation for Android handhelds. Read Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.
- Nintendo Switch family: Nintendo says downloadable software, update data, DLC, and captures can use microSD, while save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to the card. Nintendo recommends using one card because software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined simply by using multiple cards. A practical buying checklist
- Find the manufacturer’s support page or manual for your exact handheld model and, where relevant, its hardware revision.
- Confirm the accepted card family, interface, maximum capacity, and required or recommended speed marking.
- Estimate the storage needed for the games and other files you want on the card; stay within the stated device limit.
- Check which data can live on removable storage and whether the card must be formatted by the handheld.
- Compare cards that meet the device’s requirements. Do not pay extra based only on a higher peak-speed claim if your device’s support or relevant performance evidence does not justify it.
- Back up any files already on the card before formatting or moving it between devices.
