Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most Windows PCs, the best starting point is to leave Speed & Duplex on Auto Negotiation and keep other Ethernet adapter options at their defaults. A setting can help a specific workload, but there is no universal “faster” profile: results depend on the adapter and driver, the network equipment, the traffic, and the rest of the system.
Check the link and bottleneck before changing settings
An adapter setting cannot make a connection faster than its slowest relevant component. Check the negotiated Ethernet link rate in Windows, then confirm that the adapter, cable, switch or router port, and internet plan can support the rate you expect. For internet tests, the service plan and other network conditions also matter; for local transfers, the other device and storage can be limiting factors.
Intel notes that performance also depends on applications, bus type, network topology, and operating system. Its advice on suitable cabling is not a reason to replace a cable when the link is already negotiating at the expected rate. A cable is worth investigating when link checks point to a cabling problem, not as a generic speed upgrade. Intel Ethernet Adapters and Devices User Guide
Which settings are worth considering?
These options affect different things—throughput, CPU use, latency, or power behavior. Names and availability vary by network adapter and driver, so follow the documentation for your specific model rather than assuming every Windows PC exposes the same controls.

| Setting | When it may help | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Speed & Duplex | Diagnosing a known link-negotiation problem. | Auto Negotiation is the normal default. A forced mode must be supported by both ends; mismatched settings can degrade or break the link. |
| Jumbo Frames | Large local transfers or large-I/O workloads. | Every device along the path must support a matching frame size. Larger frames can be unsuitable for small-packet or latency-sensitive traffic. |
| Receive Side Scaling (RSS) and receive queues | High-throughput receive workloads where processing capacity or queue use is a measured constraint. | Benefits depend on workload and processor allocation; ordinary browsing is unlikely to need tuning. |
| Receive and transmit buffers | Investigating dropped receive packets or a measured receive-performance issue. | More is not automatically better. The useful values depend on adapter guidance and traffic patterns. |
| Interrupt Moderation | Balancing CPU overhead and packet-handling latency for a measured workload. | More moderation can reduce CPU interruptions but add latency; disabling it can increase CPU use. |
| Power management / Energy-Efficient Ethernet | Investigating a reproducible link, wake, or power-state problem. | Disabling power saving is not established as a reliable everyday throughput improvement. |
Speed & Duplex: keep Auto Negotiation unless diagnosing a specific fault
Auto Negotiation is the sensible setting for normal use. Force a speed and duplex mode only when troubleshooting a known negotiation issue, and only if the connected switch or router port supports the same mode. Forcing the highest listed value is not a general Windows speed tweak. Intel Ethernet 700/800 Series Windows Performance Tuning Guide gives Intel-specific configuration guidance; it should not be treated as a universal recommendation for other adapters.
Jumbo Frames: for compatible large transfers, not faster internet by default
Jumbo Frames may improve throughput and reduce CPU utilization when traffic consists of large blocks of data. Intel’s March 2025 guide describes this as a possible benefit for that traffic pattern. The guide’s 1500 MTU default and example 9014 Jumbo Packet value are configuration examples for its Intel 700/800 Series context, not universal settings to copy.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Every device on the path—including the other endpoint and intervening network equipment—needs compatible jumbo-frame support and matching frame-size configuration. If part of the path cannot handle the frames, packets may be dropped. Larger frames can also be a poor fit for small-packet or latency-sensitive work.
RSS and receive queues: distribute receive processing when the workload needs it
Receive Side Scaling distributes network receive processing across processors. On a high-throughput adapter, queue count and processor allocation may matter if receive processors are underused. Microsoft’s guidance discusses considering more queues in that kind of situation, but it is Windows Server-era guidance and not a promise of improvement for ordinary consumer browsing. Buffers: use evidence, not maximum values
Some drivers expose receive and transmit buffer controls. Intel suggests increasing receive buffers when receive performance drops or RX packets are being dropped, but its adapter user guide also cautions that typical TCP patterns may work best with default transmit buffers and minimum receive buffers. Those recommendations are not interchangeable across all models and workloads: use the guidance for your adapter, and change a buffer only when measurements point to a problem.
Interrupt Moderation: trade CPU work against latency
Interrupt Moderation controls how often the adapter interrupts the CPU to process packets. Higher moderation can improve CPU efficiency while adding packet-handling latency; disabling it may reduce that delay at the cost of more CPU use. Choose based on a measured latency-sensitive workload or CPU bottleneck, rather than assuming gamers or all internet users should turn it off. Intel’s discussion is specific to its 700/800 Series guide.

Power management: troubleshoot symptoms rather than chasing speed
Windows and some adapter drivers expose power-management and Energy-Efficient Ethernet controls. The available options differ by device, and the reviewed vendor guidance does not establish that turning off power saving reliably raises everyday throughput. Consider a change when investigating a repeatable link drop, wake, or power-state issue, then compare behavior before and after.

- Open PowerShell and identify the adapter and its current advanced properties with
Get-NetAdapterAdvancedProperty. Microsoft documents this cmdlet alongside the corresponding setting command. - Choose one property to test. Change only the setting connected to the measured problem; do not maximize every option or apply a profile copied from a different adapter.
- Set the supported value with
Set-NetAdapterAdvancedProperty, using the property name and value exposed by your adapter. Microsoft notes that these changes are written to the registry; some settings have dedicated cmdlets. Microsoft Learn: Set-NetAdapterAdvancedProperty - Restart the adapter if required by Windows or the driver. Some changes need an adapter restart before they take effect.
- Repeat the same measurement you used before the change—for example, the same local file transfer or latency test under comparable conditions. Keep the change only if it improves the outcome that matters without causing new problems; otherwise restore the recorded value.
For power-management properties, Microsoft documents Set-NetAdapterPowerManagement; use it only for an option supported by the adapter and a specific power-related troubleshooting goal. Microsoft Learn: Set-NetAdapterPowerManagement
A practical way to decide whether a setting helped
- For a large local transfer: verify both endpoints and the network path first; consider Jumbo Frames only when all path devices can be configured compatibly.
- For receive throughput or dropped packets: check whether the driver exposes RSS, receive queues, or receive buffers, then follow the adapter-specific guidance and test one change.
- For latency or CPU pressure: consider Interrupt Moderation only after measuring the trade-off between packet delay and CPU use.
- For a link that negotiates below expectation or drops: investigate the negotiated rate, port, cable, and both ends’ settings before forcing Speed & Duplex or changing power controls.
Microsoft’s adapter guidance describes CPU offloading as a way to reduce server CPU use and improve overall system performance. That does not mean every offload or advanced property improves every Windows PC; the feature, driver, and workload determine whether a change is useful. Microsoft Learn: Choosing a Network Adapter
