A slow Ethernet connection on a laptop can come from the cable, a router port, the laptop’s adapter or driver, or the internet service itself. First compare the laptop with another device on the same network, then check the Ethernet link rate and swap one connection component at a time. That separates a slow local link from slow internet service and helps pinpoint what to fix.

Is the Ethernet link slow, or is the internet slow?

Ethernet link speed is the negotiated rate between the laptop’s network adapter and the router or switch. An internet speed test measures data traveling beyond that local connection, and its result can also be affected by the internet plan, network congestion, or activity on other devices. A link showing 100 Mbps does not by itself prove the ISP is the bottleneck, and a gigabit link does not guarantee gigabit internet speeds.

Compare the laptop with another device

  1. Run a speed test on the laptop and on another device connected to the same network. Use the same testing service and test close together in time.
  2. If both devices are slow, look at the router, modem, ISP service, or broader network conditions before changing the laptop’s settings.
  3. If only the laptop is slow, continue with cable, router port, adapter, and driver checks. Microsoft also recommends comparing another PC when troubleshooting a slow connection: Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide.

How to check Ethernet speed on Windows and Mac

Check the reported Ethernet link rate before assuming the internet connection is the problem. The exact location of network details can vary by operating-system version and adapter.

Windows

Open the Ethernet adapter’s status and look for its link speed. If the status reports 100 Mbps but the laptop, cable, and router port are expected to support gigabit, investigate those components and their connection. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Mac

Check the Ethernet hardware details in macOS. The precise navigation varies by macOS version and Mac model. Apple documents connecting a Mac by Ethernet and using a USB-to-Ethernet or Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adapter when there is no built-in Ethernet port: Connect your Mac to the internet using Ethernet.

Why is Ethernet stuck at 100 Mbps?

A 100 Mbps reading means the laptop and the connected router or switch port have negotiated a 100 Mbps local link. A cable or connector problem, an incompatible or slower port, or adapter settings can prevent the expected higher rate. Check each part of the path; do not assume the laptop itself is faulty.

Reseat the cable and try another LAN port

  • Make sure the Ethernet cable is firmly seated at both ends.
  • Connect it to a router LAN port, not the internet/WAN port.
  • Try another LAN port, since the port in use may not support the desired rate or may be faulty.
  • Substitute a known-good cable. If the link rate changes, the original cable or its connectors may be the cause.

Microsoft recommends trying a second cable, and Intel likewise advises testing with a known-working cable when diagnosing a gigabit link. Intel’s gigabit troubleshooting guidance specifies Cat 6 or better for its case; that is not a promise that buying a higher-category cable will fix every slow connection.

Confirm both ends support the desired speed

A gigabit connection requires gigabit capability in the laptop’s Ethernet interface and the router or switch port, as well as a suitable, working cable. Intel’s guidance is specific to Intel adapters on Windows 10 64-bit, so treat it as vendor advice for that configuration rather than a universal instruction for every network device. Intel states: “Gigabit recommended setting is Auto-negotiation.” Its support article was last reviewed November 28, 2022: Intel’s gigabit Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

Restore automatic negotiation if settings were changed

Auto-negotiation should generally be enabled at both ends of the link. Avoid forcing speed or duplex as a routine first fix: mismatched settings can disrupt the connection. If you changed advanced adapter settings, restore the default or automatic setting unless your network administrator has specified a different configuration.

Check the cable, adapter, and laptop hardware

Once you have compared devices and checked the router port, use a known-good cable or adapter to see whether the problem follows a particular component. If the connection remains slow only on the laptop, inspect its Ethernet port or adapter and consider whether a software or hardware issue is plausible. Dell recommends checking the laptop’s Ethernet port and cable for physical damage in its troubleshooting guidance: Dell’s Ethernet connection troubleshooting guide.

Use the laptop maker’s driver for the exact model

If the issue began after an update or Windows reports an adapter problem, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page for an Ethernet driver that matches the exact laptop model and operating system. A driver reinstall or update is not a guaranteed speed fix: a cable, port, router, ISP, or background network activity may be responsible instead.

What to use if the laptop has no Ethernet jack

A compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter is a practical way to add a wired connection. Some Macs can also use a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adapter. Match the adapter’s connector and rated interface to the laptop’s port and operating system, and make sure the network port supports the rate you want. An adapter cannot make a slower router port or internet plan faster.

Choose what to test or replace

Option What to check What a substitution can tell you
Ethernet cable Whether it is firmly connected, suitable for the target link rate, and in working condition. If a known-good cable changes the negotiated rate, the original cable or connector may be at fault.
Router or switch LAN port Whether the port supports the desired link rate and is functioning. If another LAN port changes the result, the original port may be the issue.
Built-in laptop port or adapter Whether it supports the desired rate and is compatible with the network device. If the problem follows the laptop across known-good cables and ports, investigate its adapter, driver, or hardware.
USB or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter Whether its connector, operating-system compatibility, and rated interface suit the laptop and network. A compatible adapter can add Ethernet to a laptop without a jack; it cannot raise the capability of the router port or internet plan.
