You generally don’t add SynthID yourself. In Google’s supported image-generation workflows, the watermark is embedded automatically when the image is created. Generate or edit an image with a supported Google tool, then use Gemini or Google’s SynthID Detector to check for the watermark if needed.
How to get SynthID on a Google-generated image
- Create or edit the image with a supported Google image-generation tool. Google says images generated in Gemini are imperceptibly watermarked with SynthID. See Google DeepMind’s Gemini image-model overview.
- Save or share the resulting image normally. There is no separate manual “add SynthID” step in the consumer workflow described by Google. The watermark is embedded when supported content is created, according to Google DeepMind’s SynthID overview.
SynthID is not a visible logo, corner stamp, or downloadable overlay. Google describes its image watermark as imperceptible to people and embedded in the image pixels, rather than relying only on metadata. That means it can remain detectable if metadata is lost, though it should not be treated as impossible to remove.
How to check whether an image has SynthID
Ask Gemini
Upload the image to Gemini and ask whether it was created or altered by Google AI. Google’s SynthID overview describes this as a way to check supported content. A response is an assessment, not definitive proof of an image’s complete history.
Use the SynthID Detector
Google also describes the SynthID Detector verification portal for checking content. Interpret its result as an indication of whether SynthID was detected, not as a universal verdict about who made the image or which tools were involved.

What the watermark can and cannot tell you
Google says SynthID is designed to withstand common changes such as cropping, filters, and lossy compression. Detection is not guaranteed after every edit: Google DeepMind’s 2023 announcement cautions that extreme image manipulation may defeat it. The authors, Sven Gowal and Pushmeet Kohli, wrote that “SynthID isn’t foolproof against extreme image manipulations, but it does provide a promising technical approach for empowering people and organisations to work with AI-generated content responsibly.”
A positive result means SynthID was found and may indicate Google AI involvement; it does not establish the full provenance of an image. A negative result is not proof that an image was made by a person: the image may not have been watermarked, or changes may have made the signal harder to detect.

Gemini versus developer routes
For an individual, Gemini is the clearest documented route for image creation and checking. Google’s current Gemini image-model documentation also links to Google AI Studio and the Gemini API for developers. It does not document a separate manual SynthID toggle for those routes, so don’t assume there is a setting to switch watermarking on or off. Availability and product behavior can depend on the specific tool and access offered by Google.
Google’s original SynthID announcement, published August 29, 2023, described a beta for a limited number of Vertex AI customers using Imagen. That was the launch scope at the time, not a complete description of current availability.
