For a more comfortable Kindle page, open a book and adjust text size first, then spacing, font, margins, and alignment. On Kindle E-Readers 6th generation and newer, tap the top of the screen and select the Aa Page Display icon. The available controls depend on your Kindle model, the app you use, and the book’s format.

Change text size before fine-tuning the page

In an open book, tap the top of the screen and select Aa to open Page Display settings. Amazon’s instructions cover Kindle E-Readers 6th generation and higher, and note that display settings vary by model. See Amazon’s Kindle text display guide.

Increase or decrease the book’s font size until you can read without strain, then adjust the layout around that size. You can also pinch in or out on the page to change font size. There is no single best size: comfort and how much text you want on screen are personal trade-offs.

A separate device-level font-size control is available only on Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and higher, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. It is distinct from changing the font size in an individual book’s Aa menu. Amazon lists the eligible devices in its font enlargement instructions.

Adjust line spacing, margins, and alignment

In the Aa menu, use the layout controls to change spacing between lines, paragraphs, words, or characters; margin size; page orientation; and text alignment. If lines feel crowded, try more line spacing. If the page feels too narrow, try narrower margins. Change one control at a time so you can tell whether it helps.

A book’s page shape may shift as you change the font size. Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting can adjust kerning, ligatures, hyphenation, word spacing, and layout. For example, it may switch text to left alignment or reduce a two-column layout to one when a large font or short line length calls for it. The change can be expected behavior rather than a fault with the Kindle; see Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting overview.

Try another font or adjust boldness

The Aa menu lets you choose among the fonts available for a book and change boldness. A heavier weight may make characters easier to distinguish, while a lighter weight may suit readers who prefer less visual density. Compare options at your chosen font size instead of assuming one typeface or weight works best for everyone.

Use themes and page color where available

On Kindle e-readers, themes can save combinations of Font, Layout, and More settings, making it easier to switch between preferred setups. Kindle reading apps also offer appearance options, but their labels and available features differ across mobile, desktop, and web versions. Depending on the platform, you may find page colors, dark mode, or preset and custom themes. Amazon’s Kindle Reading Apps accessibility and reading-options guide describes app options; check the controls in your own app rather than expecting them to match an e-reader.

Set screen brightness and warmth on compatible Kindles

On a Kindle e-reader, brightness is available through Quick Actions or Settings. Compatible models may also provide a warmth control, and some offer Dark Mode. These are device-dependent features, not universal Kindle settings. Open your device’s Screen and brightness controls to see what it supports. Amazon’s screen-light instructions cover the available controls.

Check whether the book allows visual adjustments

Reflowable books adapt to a reader’s font and layout choices. Fixed-layout titles—including print replica books, manga, comics, and some children’s books or textbooks—preserve their designed pages and may not allow visual adjustments. Amazon’s Kindle book accessibility information guide explains how book details can indicate appearance adjustment and nonvisual-reading support.

If Aa controls do not change a book’s text, the title may have a fixed layout or may not support visual adjustments. Publisher styling can also lock body font size or line height, overriding reader preferences. Amazon’s publishing guidance recommends avoiding thin body fonts because they can affect perceived contrast; see Kindle reflowable text guidelines.

Know what accessibility information does—and does not—promise

Amazon’s book-detail accessibility labels can help you check whether a title’s appearance is adjustable and what nonvisual reading support it provides. Support varies by title, device, and app. Most reflowable Kindle text is accessible to assistive technologies, but meaningful images, graphs, tables, or video may need text alternatives. Print-replica and image-based fixed-layout books are not readable in read-aloud and braille, and Amazon notes that alt text and MathML are not currently readable on Kindle e-readers. Check the book’s details and the capabilities of your specific device or app before relying on a feature.
