Run a reliability review as a controlled experiment: choose one important service and one failure mode, define measurable expectations, set limits and a stop plan, then inject the fault and compare what happened with what you predicted. AI can help gather and organize evidence, but people must verify its analysis and approve consequential actions. The review is not complete until someone owns the resulting fixes and the team reruns the experiment to check them.
What an AI-assisted chaos engineering review tests
Chaos engineering tests how a system behaves when a selected fault occurs. It is a planned experiment, not random damage: the team states what it expects to happen, introduces a bounded failure, and observes whether the system’s actual behavior matches that expectation.
The review should answer a question about a user or business outcome, such as whether a checkout service continues to accept orders when a dependency becomes unavailable, or whether a service recovers within its intended limits after a worker fails. A useful result is evidence about resilience and a clear list of follow-up actions—not a claim that the system is reliable in every circumstance.
AWS Well-Architected’s REL12-BP04 recommends focusing on measurable system output rather than internal attributes. In practice, that means watching signals such as throughput, error rate, and latency percentiles, and adding a customer-facing signal or synthetic monitor when it helps show whether users were affected.

How to plan a safe, measurable experiment
1. Pick the outcome and target
State which user journey or business outcome is at risk, what the team needs to learn, and how it will recognize an unacceptable result. Select a critical customer-facing service or foundational dependency with enough observability to assess the effect. Map relevant upstream and downstream services, third-party integrations, and the parts of the user journey that rely on the target.
Review incident history and existing remediation work before choosing a hypothesis. If the team already knows about a defect, address it or account for it explicitly rather than presenting it as a new discovery. AWS Prescriptive Guidance’s continuous chaos engineering lifecycle places known-issue remediation before experiment definition and execution.
2. Write a falsifiable hypothesis
Document four things: the fault to inject, the expected system behavior, how the fault will be introduced, and the observable result that would show the expectation was wrong. For example: “If one application worker becomes unavailable, requests will continue to succeed through the remaining workers, and the customer-facing error rate will stay below our agreed limit.” Replace the illustrative threshold with the service’s own approved objective; do not assume a universal acceptable value.
Define the steady state before the run: the normal workload and the signals that indicate whether the service is functioning acceptably. Record a baseline for the relevant measures, including latency percentiles, throughput, and errors, plus any user-facing signal the team relies on. Without a baseline and observable outcome, the experiment cannot reliably distinguish a fault’s effect from ordinary variation.

3. Bound the blast radius and prepare to stop
Start in a lower environment, especially for a team’s first experiment or an unfamiliar fault. Keep the scope as small as the question permits, and specify which workloads, systems, regions, and time window are in scope. Production experiments require monitored guardrails and an agreed response if a threshold is reached.
Before starting, agree on the stop conditions, who has authority to halt the run, which teams need notice, how the fault will be rolled back, and how to restore a known-good state. Verify that monitoring and alerting work, that the recovery path is understood, and that the people responsible can reach the relevant systems. If the service cannot be observed or safely restored, postpone the experiment.
AWS Well-Architected states that AWS Fault Injection Service (AWS FIS) supports up to five stop conditions per experiment template in the cited 2025 framework version. That is an AWS-specific limit, not a general limit for chaos engineering tools. Choose a tool’s safeguards based on the planned experiment rather than assuming this number applies elsewhere.
How to run and document the experiment
- Confirm readiness. Check the approved scope, current workload, baseline signals, team notifications, stop authority, rollback method, and observability. Do not proceed if a required safeguard is missing.
- Start the workload and observe steady state. Confirm the service is behaving within the agreed baseline before introducing a fault. Note the time and relevant workload conditions.
- Inject only the planned fault. Use the approved method and scope. Do not add a second failure or expand the blast radius mid-run to make the result more dramatic.
- Watch the target and the user outcome. Track the component receiving the fault alongside service-level and customer-facing signals. Compare the observations with the hypothesis and stop conditions.
- Stop or roll back when needed. Halt the experiment and restore the workload if a guardrail is breached, the impact exceeds scope, or the team cannot confidently assess safety. Follow the pre-agreed recovery path rather than improvising a broader intervention.
- Capture the result. Record the fault, scope, workload, relevant conditions, timestamps, observed signals, stop or rollback actions, and whether the hypothesis held. Preserve links or references to the dashboards, logs, incident reports, and configuration changes that support the account.
Keep the run record factual. Separate observed behavior (“the error rate rose after the dependency timeout began”) from interpretation (“the timeout may have caused retries to saturate the worker pool”). That distinction makes later review and verification more useful.

Where AI helps—and where it must not decide
Use AI to reduce information-gathering and synthesis work: summarize relevant incident history, organize logs and telemetry, suggest candidate causal links, draft a hypothesis, or propose mitigations for human review. Ask it to point each claim back to a specific dashboard, log, incident report, runbook, or configuration change. If it cannot provide traceable evidence, treat the statement as an unverified suggestion.
Keep three categories distinct in notes and reports:
- Observed facts: signals, timestamps, configuration state, and actions supported by the run record.
- Generated hypotheses: possible explanations or relationships suggested by AI or a reviewer but not yet verified.
- Approved decisions: actions accepted by the accountable human, with scope and rationale recorded.
Before any AI-assisted action can change production state, define its permitted scope, approval requirement, rollback path, and escalation route. Require human approval for risky or consequential changes; escalate cases that are uncertain, outside the approved boundaries, or unsupported by clear evidence. AI-generated explanations are not proof of causation, and AI should not silently broaden an experiment or authorize its own recovery actions.
Google’s published AI Operator example describes risk-tiered autonomy in incident operations: human acceptance for critical operations at L2, autonomous mitigation for bounded minor incidents at L3, and escalation when the system cannot identify a root cause or the case falls outside its safe boundaries. This is an example of one organization’s incident-mitigation approach, not a universal standard or evidence that Google’s system runs chaos experiments. It is also not a product recommendation.

How to review findings and verify fixes
After the run, hold a blameless review with the people who planned, observed, and responded to it. Compare the actual signals with the hypothesis, identify where the system behaved as expected and where it did not, and preserve the evidence needed to support each conclusion. Google SRE’s Incident Management Guide emphasizes preparation and coordination; its guidance also warns that “Chaos will naturally prevail unless it is actively managed.”
Turn meaningful resilience and security findings into backlog work with an owner and a way to verify completion. Prioritize actions according to their impact and risk, rather than treating every observation as equally urgent. Once a change is made, repeat the relevant experiment under an appropriate scope and compare the result with the original finding. A fix is not verified merely because it was deployed.
Where a failure mode is important and the experiment can be run safely and repeatably, schedule recurring runs or automate it as a regression check. Preserve results so the team can compare behavior over time and after relevant system changes. AWS Well-Architected recommends repeating experiments and retaining their results.

Tool selection depends on the target platform and the failure you need to test. AWS Fault Injection Service is an AWS-specific example for fault injection using experiment templates, guardrails, stop conditions, and post-actions. AWS reliability-testing guidance also names Gremlin as a tool option. Those references do not establish a current vendor ranking or endorsement; check current documentation before relying on a product’s capabilities.

Compare candidate tools and manual approaches against the requirements of the experiment:
- Targets and faults: Can it reach the services and dependencies in scope and introduce the failure modes you need?
- Scope controls: Can you constrain the blast radius and define monitored stop conditions?
- Recovery: Is rollback or recovery behavior clear, and can the team restore a known-good state?
- Observability: Can results be assessed alongside the metrics, logs, traces, and customer-facing signals the team already uses?
- Audit and retention: Can the team preserve what ran, when it ran, what happened, and the evidence used in the review?
- Human control: Does the workflow support approval and escalation before consequential actions?
These are decision criteria, not a vendor scorecard. A tool that can inject a fault is not sufficient by itself: the review still needs a clear hypothesis, operational readiness, a safe stop plan, and owned follow-up work.
A reusable review record
Capture the following in the experiment plan and update the same record with the run result:
- Objective: user or business outcome at risk and the question the team needs answered.
- Target and scope: service, dependencies, workload, environment, time window, and excluded systems.
- Known context: relevant incidents, existing defects, and remediation already in progress.
- Hypothesis: selected fault, expected behavior, injection method, and falsifying observation.
- Steady state: baseline workload and observable system and user-facing signals.
- Safety plan: guardrails, stop conditions, stop authority, notifications, rollback, and recovery procedure.
- Run evidence: timestamps, workload conditions, fault actions, observed results, and references to source telemetry.
- AI contribution: summaries or suggestions produced, evidence references checked, and human decisions made.
- Follow-up: findings, priority, owner, verification method, and date or condition for a repeat run.
AWS Well-Architected cites the Principles of Chaos Engineering: “Focus on the measurable output of a system, rather than internal attributes of the system.” Use that principle to keep the review centered on observable behavior and customer impact.
