Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can borrow a library ebook and read it on a Kindle when your library offers that title in Kindle format. For the US Libby and OverDrive borrowing flow, the essential steps are to borrow a listing marked Kindle Book, then complete the handoff at Amazon by selecting Get Library Book.
Before you start: check the format and region
Kindle delivery through Libby and OverDrive is available for US libraries. OverDrive states, “Kindle Books are currently available for U.S. libraries only.” (OverDrive Help; Libby Help)
Not every ebook in a library’s collection can be sent to Kindle. Look for the listing’s Kindle Book format; in OverDrive’s catalog, use the format filter to find eligible titles. Check the book’s details for device restrictions, which OverDrive says are most common with picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels. (OverDrive borrowing instructions)
Borrow and send a library book to Kindle
- Open your library’s collection. In Libby, add your public library and library card, or visit the library’s OverDrive website. What you can borrow depends on the library’s digital collection and current availability.
- Find an eligible title. Search for the book and confirm that its format is Kindle Book. Review any title-specific device restrictions before borrowing.
- Borrow the book. Select Borrow, sign in to your library account if prompted, and choose a lending period if the catalog offers a choice.
- Complete the Amazon handoff. On the OverDrive website, select Read now with Kindle. Amazon opens; sign in if asked, then select Get Library Book. Borrowing through OverDrive alone does not finish delivery—the Amazon step is required for the title to appear on your Kindle device or reading app. (OverDrive Help)
- Download and read. Connect a Kindle e-reader to Wi-Fi so it can download the book from Amazon. Kindle reading apps are also supported. Once delivered, the loan can be read like another Kindle Book.
Choose Libby or the OverDrive website
Use whichever interface you prefer for browsing: Libby or your library’s OverDrive website. In either case, the title must be offered as a Kindle Book, and availability is determined by the library’s collection. The cited guidance does not establish that either interface has a broader selection. OverDrive’s website instructions explicitly include the Amazon handoff after borrowing. Fix common Kindle borrowing problems
The title has no Kindle option
Check the title’s listed format and device restrictions. If the library does not offer that title as a Kindle Book, or its restrictions exclude your device, the Kindle delivery option will not be available. OverDrive describes Libby and library OverDrive websites as the routes for public-library Kindle-compatible books; it also calls itself the exclusive provider of Kindle-compatible ebooks to US public libraries. (OverDrive Kindle information)
Libby will not send the loan to Kindle
Check whether you already downloaded the loan in another format, such as EPUB. Libby says that after downloading a different format, you cannot send that same loan to Kindle from Libby; its stated remedy is to borrow the book again. (Libby Help: Why can’t I send a book to Kindle?)
