To reduce possible PFAS exposure from drinking water during pregnancy, first find out what is in your water: ask your utility for public-water results, or ask your state environmental or health agency how to test a private well. If PFAS are present—or a concern remains—consider a treatment system with a verified PFAS-reduction certification, maintain it as directed, or use an alternate water source for activities where water is swallowed. No filter guarantees removal of every PFAS or prevents a health outcome.
Why drinking water matters during pregnancy
PFAS can be a concern when they are present in water used for drinking or other activities where water is swallowed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says pregnant and lactating people may drink more water relative to body weight and could therefore have greater exposure if their drinking water contains PFAS. EPA also describes possible exposure in utero and exposure to infants through formula prepared with contaminated water. This general information cannot predict an individual pregnancy outcome or quantify a particular person’s risk. For personal health concerns, speak with your clinician and relevant public-health agencies. EPA: PFAS and Your Health
Find out what is in your water
If you use public water
Ask your water utility which PFAS it has measured, how to access the test results, and what it recommends. Many public water systems make results available. EPA also directs consumers to federal resources for water-system results. EPA: PFAS in Drinking Water
If you use a private well
Contact your state environmental or health agency for local testing advice and a list of laboratories using EPA-developed methods. Testing recommendations and available laboratories can differ by state, so do not assume a single test kit or national source is appropriate for every well. EPA: PFAS and Private Wells

- Powerful filtration for total confidence: Each water pitcher is equipped with a powerful Culligan with ZeroWater Technology filter, certified to reduce 5x more contaminants than the leading filter.
- Includes TDS water tester: Our built-in TDS meter measures the level of dissolved solids in your water instantly and alerts you when it’s time to change your filter. When the meter reads 0, that means your filter is removing virtually all TDS from your water.
- Space-saving design: Our BPA-free pour-through filtered water pitchers and water dispensers fit easily into small refrigerators or stand elegantly on your countertop, saving you space without sacrificing style.
Choose a response based on the results and your concern
If testing identifies PFAS, ask your utility or state agency what action is appropriate for your location. If you cannot resolve a concern, EPA describes two options: an alternate water source for activities involving swallowed water, or in-home treatment with a suitable system. An alternate source may be used for drinking, preparing food, cooking, brushing teeth, and preparing infant formula. This is general guidance, not an individualized pregnancy-care recommendation. EPA: Steps to Reduce Your Risk
Compare treatment options without assuming one is best for every home
EPA identifies granular activated carbon, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis as treatment options. Performance depends on the PFAS present, the system, and water conditions. Compare the exact reduction claim and certification for the product and contaminant of interest, not just a broad “PFAS” label. EPA: Reducing PFAS in Drinking Water

- Advanced Filtration: Our 5-Stage Ion Exchange Filter removes virtually all dissolved solids (TDS) for the purest tasting water; Total Dissolved Solids are organic and inorganic materials, such as metals, minerals, salts, and ions dissolved in water.
- IAPMO Certified & BPA-Free: Our 5-Stage filter is IAPMO Certified to reduce PFOA/PFOS, lead, chromium, and mercury. All Culligan ZeroWater products are made from BPA-Free plastic.
- Your New Water Filter System: Your purchase includes a 10 Cup water filter pitcher dispenser, 5-Stage Ion Exchange Water Filter, and a TDS meter that read TDS level. Compatible with ZeroWater & Culligan ZeroWater systems and filters.
- Less Plastic, More Hydration: You can save up to 110 single-use plastic bottles per filter or up to 660 bottles a year while enjoying the purest tasting water with your Culligan Zero Water Filter System.
Granular activated carbon (GAC)
GAC adsorbs contaminants as water passes through carbon. Its performance varies with the carbon type and amount, flow rate, water chemistry, and contaminants present. EPA says GAC tends to work better on longer-chain PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS than on shorter-chain PFAS such as PFBS and PFBA. A statement that GAC can be fully effective for a period under particular conditions is not a guarantee for every household filter or a promise of permanent removal.
Ion-exchange resin
Ion-exchange systems use resin beads that attract and hold contaminants. The resin has limited capacity, so the media must be replaced according to the system’s instructions.

- Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
- Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
- Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
- Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
- Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.
Reverse osmosis (RO)
RO membranes separate treated water from a reject-water stream. EPA describes point-of-use RO systems as effective in the systems studied, but performance is not a universal guarantee for every model or water supply. Consider installation requirements, membrane replacement, water use, and how the system handles reject water. EPA’s filter-identification guidance lists point-of-use RO systems at $150–$1,000 excluding maintenance; the page result does not establish that as a current market price. EPA: Point-of-Use Reverse Osmosis Systems
Verify the exact certification and keep the system maintained
EPA advises looking for applicable NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 certification for PFAS reduction, depending on the system type, and checking the certification body’s directory if you are uncertain about a product’s claim. Verify the exact model and reduction claim; certification or general PFAS marketing does not establish performance for every PFAS compound or water supply. EPA’s guidance describing certification as of April 2024 cautioned that the certifications then discussed did not establish reduction to the levels in EPA’s newer drinking-water standard. Check current certification information rather than treating that dated status as current. EPA: Reducing PFAS in Drinking Water with Treatment Technologies

Replace cartridges, resin, and membranes on the manufacturer’s schedule. Neglected or expired media should not be assumed to keep reducing PFAS reliably. Before buying, compare the product’s stated filter life and replacement costs, installation needs, and the specific PFAS in your water. EPA’s cited range for home filters was $20 to more than $1,000, excluding maintenance, in guidance describing prices and certification as of April 2024; it is not a current quote for a particular product.

RO systems produce reject water as part of treatment. EPA says WaterSense-labeled point-of-use RO systems use more than 3,100 gallons less water per year on average than a typical point-of-use RO system. This is an EPA average, not a guarantee for an individual household; EPA released the WaterSense specification for point-of-use RO in November 2024.
