Use Ctrl+R in an interactive Bash prompt to find and reuse a command, or pipe history to grep to list matches. Those methods search different things: Ctrl-R and history search the current shell’s in-memory history list, while grep on $HISTFILE reads the saved file, which may not yet contain recent commands.
Choose the right Bash history search

Use -F for ordinary command fragments such as ssh, paths, or text containing punctuation. Use -E only when you intend the pattern to be a regular expression.
Find a command with Ctrl-R
At an interactive Bash prompt, press Ctrl+R and type a distinctive substring from the command. Readline searches backward incrementally: each typed character narrows the match. Press Ctrl+R again to move to another match in the search direction. GNU Bash documents that in emacs editing mode, “type C-r to search backward in the history for a particular string.” GNU Bash Reference Manual: Searching.
When the desired command appears, pressing Enter accepts and executes it. To review or change it first, use a movement key to leave the search and make the found line editable; do not press Enter until you are ready to run it. The default key binding depends on Readline’s editing mode and configuration, so customized bindings may differ.

Print matching history entries with grep
To list current-shell entries containing the literal text ssh, run:
history | grep -F -- 'ssh'Add -i when capitalization should not matter:
history | grep -Fi -- 'ssh'The history builtin displays the current shell’s history list, and GNU grep prints lines containing matches. -F makes the search text a fixed string rather than a regular expression; quoting the pattern keeps the shell from interpreting its characters, while -- marks the end of grep options so a pattern beginning with a hyphen is treated as a pattern. If you actually need a regular expression, use -E for extended regular expressions:
history | grep -E -- 'ssh.*prod'Without -F or -E, grep uses basic regular expressions by default. In a regular expression, characters such as ., *, and brackets can have special meaning. GNU grep manual: Regular Expressions.

Search the saved history file
To search the file Bash is configured to use, run:
grep -F -- 'ssh' "${HISTFILE:-$HOME/.bash_history}"HISTFILE identifies the history file; if it is unset, Bash’s default is ~/.bash_history. To see the configured path, use:
printf '%sn' "$HISTFILE"A file search reads what has been written to disk. It can miss commands still present only in an open shell’s in-memory list: Bash initializes history from the history file and normally saves an interactive shell’s history when that shell exits. Why a remembered command may not appear
A search can only find entries retained in the particular history list or file being searched. Bash’s history settings can limit or exclude commands:
HISTSIZEsets the maximum number of commands kept in the in-memory history list. The GNU Bash Reference Manual gives a default of 500 commands after startup files are read; your configuration may change it.HISTFILESIZElimits the number of lines retained in the history file.HISTCONTROLcan suppress entries based on rules such asignorespace,ignoredups,ignoreboth, orerasedups.HISTIGNOREcan exclude command lines matching configured patterns.
