Yes—most portable air conditioners must exhaust hot air outdoors to cool a room effectively. Their hose can go through a suitable exterior opening, not only a window, but it should not discharge into another room, an attic, or another enclosed indoor space. Follow your model’s manual for approved venting options and hose limits.
Why a portable air conditioner needs an exhaust route
A conventional portable air conditioner moves heat; it does not make that heat disappear. Indoor air passes over a cold evaporator and returns to the room cooled. A separate airflow path carries heat from the hot condenser away. The U.S. Department of Energy describes the removed heat as transferred to the outdoor airflow path and discharged outdoors in its portable air conditioner test-procedure explanation.
In a single-duct design, the condenser exhaust leaves through one duct. A dual-duct design has separate ducts for condenser intake and discharge, as described in the DOE’s portable AC technical materials. In either case, ordinary room cooling depends on routing the hot exhaust out of the conditioned space. GE Appliances likewise warns that operating a portable AC without its exhaust vent will not remove heat and humidity from the room: GE’s exhaust-hose guidance.
Where can you vent a portable AC?
A window is the usual route, but it is not the only possible one. The outlet must lead outdoors, and the installation must be supported by the specific model and its approved parts.

- Window: Fit the supplied or model-compatible window panel, connect the hose as the manual directs, and close gaps around the panel.
- Exterior wall: This may work if the unit supports the arrangement and the duct terminates outdoors. Check the manual and use an appropriate wall kit.
- Door or another opening: Some manufacturer guidance allows a suitable door or other opening, but not every model has compatible hardware or supports every route. Honeywell/Jmatek describes these alternatives alongside model-specific limits in its portable AC support guidance.
De’Longhi also provides model-dependent guidance on venting a portable AC through an appropriate opening: De’Longhi’s venting FAQ. Start with your owner’s manual; window plates, adapters, hose dimensions, and permitted routing vary by unit.
Why venting indoors does not work
Sending the exhaust hose into another room, an attic, or another enclosed indoor area transfers the heat rather than removing it from the building. It will not provide effective net cooling for the conditioned space. GE specifically says the discharge should go outdoors, not into an attic or another indoor space.

There is a distinct exception in the terminology: the DOE describes spot coolers that discharge condenser heat into the surrounding conditioned space while directing cooled air toward a localized zone. That trade-off can suit a targeted cooling use where the heat is acceptable, but a spot cooler is not equivalent to cooling a whole room with a conventional portable AC.
Install and route the hose correctly
- Check the manual for your exact model. Confirm which openings and kits are approved, and note the hose’s permitted length and routing.
- Use the correct panel and connections. Install the supplied window kit or a manufacturer-approved alternative that matches the unit and opening.
- Keep the hose within the specified limits. Avoid unapproved extensions, excessive bends, or restricted routing. Honeywell/Jmatek advises against extending the hose because extra length can restrict airflow and reduce cooling; GE also cautions that extensions can reduce efficiency.
- Seal gaps around the opening. Insulate or seal the installation board and window gaps as directed; LG’s portable AC installation instructions describe insulating the board and gaps.
- Make sure the outlet ends outdoors. Do not redirect the hot-air hose into an interior room or attic as a workaround.
Choosing a portable AC for your opening
If you are selecting a unit, compare its exhaust arrangement and installation fit rather than assuming every portable AC works with the same kit.

Is a hose-free air cooler the same thing?
Not necessarily. A hose-free evaporative air cooler is a different device category from a refrigerant-cycle portable air conditioner. Do not assume that a wheeled device without an exhaust hose will provide the same kind of air conditioning; check the product type and its manufacturer’s description.
