Bash history can be missing commands because they were filtered out, the history list or file has a restrictive size limit, the shell is not saving to the file you expect, or another open terminal overwrote the shared history file. A command may still appear in the current shell’s in-memory history even before it is written to disk; Bash normally saves history when an eligible shell exits.
First, find out where the command is missing
Check both the current shell’s list and the history file. Run these commands in the Bash session where you entered the missing command:
history | tail
printf 'HISTFILE=%snHISTSIZE=%snHISTFILESIZE=%snHISTCONTROL=%snHISTIGNORE=%sn'
"$HISTFILE" "$HISTSIZE" "$HISTFILESIZE" "$HISTCONTROL" "$HISTIGNORE"
set -o | grep history
shopt histappend
If the command appears in history but not in the file, focus on the save path, permissions, and whether the shell has exited. If it is missing from the current list too, check filtering, history status, and the in-memory limit. The GNU Bash Reference Manual’s history facilities describes when Bash reads and saves history.
Check whether Bash is filtering the command
HISTCONTROL and HISTIGNORE can intentionally exclude commands before they become history entries. Bash checks the whole command line against HISTIGNORE patterns.

Inspect the values using the diagnostic command above. If a rule is hiding commands you want to keep, adjust the assignments in the interactive startup file where they are set, then start a new shell. Bash documents these variables in its variable reference. Avoid removing an intentional filter without considering why it was configured.
Verify the history file and save permissions
Bash normally uses ~/.bash_history, but HISTFILE can select a different location. An unset or empty HISTFILE disables exit-time saving, and Bash does not save when the selected history file is unwritable. The manual states: “If HISTFILE is unset or null, or if the history file is unwritable, the history is not saved.”
- Run
printf 'HISTFILE=%sn' "$HISTFILE"to see the path in the current shell. - Check that the displayed path is the file you expect and that its parent directory and file allow your user to write.
- If you change
HISTFILE, set it in the interactive Bash startup configuration so future shells use the intended path.
See the official manual’s history facilities and Bash variables documentation for the file behavior and variable definition.
Check history status and size limits
Interactive Bash enables command history by default, but history depends on the shell’s history option. Check set -o and confirm that history is on. A non-interactive script does not necessarily behave like a command entered at an interactive prompt; Bash documents the distinction in its interactive shell reference.
Two limits can also explain missing entries:
HISTSIZElimits the number of commands retained in the current shell’s in-memory list. A value of zero prevents commands from being retained there.HISTFILESIZElimits the number of lines kept in the history file. A value of zero truncates that file to zero lines.
If these values are too small for your use, raise them in the interactive startup file that sets them and open a new shell. The Bash variable reference defines both limits.
Keep multiple terminals from overwriting each other’s history
By default, a Bash shell reads the history file when it starts and, when it exits, can overwrite the file with its own recent history entries. With multiple long-lived terminals, one shell may therefore replace entries another shell saved after they both started from an earlier file state.

To make future eligible shell exits append rather than overwrite, add this to your interactive Bash startup configuration:
shopt -s histappend
Start a new shell for the setting to take effect. The Bash shopt documentation describes this option. If you want a shell to append its newly entered history lines to the file before it exits, run:

history -a
If you configure a prompt hook to run history -a continually, preserve any existing PROMPT_COMMAND behavior rather than replacing it unintentionally.
Use history file commands deliberately
Bash provides built-ins for synchronizing history with a file. history -a appends new history lines from the current shell. history -r reads the history file into the current shell’s list. history -w writes the current list to the file, so it can replace the file contents rather than merely append new lines. Choose the operation that matches your goal; use the history built-in reference for the exact behavior.
If the checks do not explain the missing entries
Confirm that the session is actually Bash by running printf '%sn' "$BASH_VERSION", then inspect the startup files used by that shell for assignments to the history variables or history options. Startup-file behavior can vary by shell and environment; do not assume settings documented for Bash apply unchanged to another shell.
