Use a tripod, a wide-angle lens, manual focus, and a run of consecutive exposures aimed at a broad patch of dark sky. Test your focus and exposure before the shower becomes active, then leave the camera in place: meteors are brief and unpredictable, and no setting can guarantee a capture.
Plan for a dark, clear night
Check the shower’s activity period and forecast peak, local weather, Moon phase and moonrise or moonset, and the radiant’s height for your location. Clouds and a bright Moon can diminish what you can see and photograph, as NASA’s guide notes. A shower’s predicted peak is not an exact appointment; activity can be strongest somewhat earlier or later, and nearby nights may still be worthwhile. The American Meteor Society (AMS) explains that published rates are guides, not promises, and actual viewing depends on conditions and radiant height.
Many showers are best observed from midnight to dawn, but the useful hours vary by shower and location. Check a current shower calendar and local conditions rather than relying on old schedules; NASA’s guide was last updated November 5, 2024, and its embedded 2019 shower table is historical.
Choose a lens and frame a wide area
A wide-angle lens gives a meteor more opportunities to cross the frame. A telephoto lens records a smaller patch of sky, so it is generally a less forgiving choice for an unpredictable event. Use what you have if it is suitable; a particular camera model or lens is not required by the cited guidance.

Do not aim only at the radiant—the apparent point from which shower meteors seem to emerge. Meteors can appear across a large area, and trails farther from the radiant can be longer. Point toward a broad, dark portion of sky, optionally including a foreground feature, then keep the composition steady instead of following individual meteors. Sky & Telescope makes the same practical point: leave the camera aimed where it is rather than chasing meteors.
Set focus and exposure with test frames
Focus manually on a star
Set the camera to manual exposure and manual focus; autofocus often struggles in the dark. Turn the focus ring toward infinity as a starting point, but do not assume the infinity mark is exact. Take a short test exposure, magnify a star in playback, and adjust focus until the star looks sharp.

Start with a short enough shutter speed
Use the widest practical aperture, then test a shutter speed that keeps stars acceptably point-like for your focal length and camera. NASA describes the 500 Rule as a rough ceiling: divide 500 by the lens focal length in millimeters to estimate seconds before star trails appear. For example, NASA’s guide gives 25 seconds for a 20 mm lens. Treat this as an approximation, not a guarantee; sensor format, resolution, intended enlargement, and your tolerance for trailing affect the result.
Canon’s meteor guidance offers 15–30 seconds as a useful starting range and warns that multi-minute exposures can make meteors dim or invisible. These are examples to test, not universal settings. Review a frame and adjust one setting at a time. If the sky looks too dark, NASA suggests opening the aperture or raising ISO. Balance brightness against noise, sky glow, and star movement; there is no single correct ISO or aperture for every camera and sky.

RAW capture can give you more latitude for tonal adjustments later, but it is optional rather than a requirement in the cited guidance.
Run consecutive exposures
Because a meteor may appear and vanish between exposures, make a continuous sequence over an extended period rather than relying on one frame. Use the camera’s built-in interval timer if it can repeat exposures for the required duration. A compatible remote shutter release or wireless trigger can also help avoid touching the camera and introducing vibration. Check that your camera supports the sequence and exposure length you intend to use.

Canon advises turning off long-exposure noise reduction for this use. That feature makes a second reference exposure after each image, doubling the cycle time and leaving a gap when a meteor could appear. Canon recommends continuous time-lapse capture over a period such as a few hours to increase the number of frames and chances of a well-composed meteor. Your actual session length is constrained by battery life, storage, temperature, and camera settings; the cited sources establish no universal battery or card capacity.

- Tripod: A stable tripod keeps the framing steady during long exposures. NASA notes that even a lightweight tripod can work, though added weight may help in wind. A secure improvised support is an alternative if it prevents the camera from slipping.
- Interval timer or remote: The camera’s built-in timer may be enough. If not, choose a compatible intervalometer or remote shutter release and verify compatibility with your camera before buying.
- Fast wide-angle lens: This is an optional upgrade that can combine broad sky coverage with more light gathering. Canon describes using 14–35 mm depending on composition in its own guidance; that range reflects the author’s equipment context, not a universal prescription. Check lens mount and sensor format when assessing fit.
What to expect from the results
Good technique improves your chances but does not make a meteor appear on schedule. A dark, clear sky, a favorable Moon window, stable framing, accurate focus, and repeated exposures all help; the event itself remains unpredictable. Shower-rate estimates describe observing conditions rather than how many meteors a camera will capture, so they cannot predict your photo yield.
