For most rooms where you can safely and legally install one, a properly sized window AC is the better default: it generally uses energy more efficiently and keeps the main heat-rejecting assembly outside the room. Choose a portable AC when a window unit is not practical or you need easier seasonal removal. Portable units still need an exhaust route through a window; they are not vent-free.

How the two types differ

A room air conditioner is designed to mount in a window or through a wall. A portable AC sits inside the conditioned room and sends hot condenser exhaust outdoors through a duct attached to an adjustable window bracket. That difference affects efficiency, space, installation and how well the opening must be sealed.

Consideration Window AC Portable AC
Placement Mounted in a window or through a wall. Sits in the conditioned room.
Heat exhaust The main assembly mounts at the building opening, with the heat-rejecting equipment outside. Hot condenser exhaust travels through a duct to an adjustable window bracket.
Common advantage Often favorable for efficiency and keeping compressor-side heat out of the room; check the specific model and installation. Useful when window mounting is not feasible or seasonal removal flexibility matters.
Main constraints Suitable opening, secure support, sealing and permission under landlord or building rules. Floor space, duct routing, window-kit fit and sealing.
Buying check Match capacity to the room and compare current CEER and label data. Confirm the rated capacity, included or compatible exhaust hardware, and current energy data.

Efficiency: why a window unit is usually the better default

In its April 2021 rulemaking analysis, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimated portable AC capacity at 2,500–10,000 Btu/h with CEER ratings of 4–8 Btu/Wh, compared with 5,000–35,000 Btu/h and CEER ratings of 9–15 Btu/Wh for room ACs. These are historical category estimates, not guarantees about current models. Compare current ratings for the products you are considering. DOE says portable AC manufacturers must use Appendix CC test methods for current compliance ratings: DOE’s portable air conditioner information.

The portable format also has a heat-transfer trade-off. A single-duct model draws condenser inlet air from the conditioned room and exhausts it outdoors. A dual-duct model draws some or all condenser inlet air from outside and exhausts through a separate duct. Either way, the exhaust hose, bracket fit and sealing affect the setup; poor sealing can let outside air leak in and undermine comfort and energy performance.

For a cost illustration—not a portable-versus-window bill comparison—DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) modeled a 12,000 Btu/h room AC using 750 hours per year, 11.1¢/kWh (the federal-facility average as of July 2024) and an assumed nine-year life. Its ENERGY STAR example uses 612 kWh annually, costing $67 a year and $480 over nine years; its less-efficient example uses 826 kWh, costing $91 a year and $648 over nine years. Your costs will depend on your unit, usage and local electricity rate. See FEMP’s room AC guidance.

Capacity and room fit matter more than buying the biggest unit

Measure the room and account for sun exposure, ceiling height, insulation and adjoining open areas before choosing capacity. An oversized unit may cool the air quickly without running long enough to remove sufficient humidity. ENERGY STAR puts it plainly: “An oversized air conditioner costs more to purchase, wastes energy and does not provide better cooling.” Follow its room AC sizing and buying guidance, and compare standardized product ratings rather than relying only on a brand’s capacity label.

Fits most double-hung or sliding windows, requires no drilling, and can be set up in minutes — ideal for renters or temporary cooling needs.

Very large or open-plan spaces, unusual insulation, or building restrictions can make either room-AC format a poor fit. Without the room details and the unit’s rating, there is no sound basis for naming a specific capacity.

Noise, floor space and seasonal removal

Noise varies by model and design; the available evidence does not establish a controlled, across-the-market decibel comparison between portable and window ACs. ENERGY STAR notes that variable-speed compressors can cool quietly. Some U-shaped or saddle-style window models place the compressor outside, which may reduce noise in the room. Check the exact model’s sound information and design rather than assuming one type is always quieter.

A window unit preserves indoor floor space but requires a suitable, secure opening and may need to be removed or covered when the season ends. A portable model avoids mounting the AC body in the window and may be easier to remove, but it still takes up floor area and its hose needs a workable route to the window.

Choose based on your room and installation

Choose a window AC if

  • You have permission, an appropriate window or through-wall opening, and safe support for the unit.
  • You expect to cool the same room through the season and value floor space and efficiency.
  • You can seal the installation properly and choose a capacity suited to the room.

Choose a portable AC if

  • You cannot safely or lawfully mount a window unit, or seasonal removability is important.
  • Your window accepts the portable unit’s exhaust bracket and the hose can reach without kinks.
  • You can accommodate the unit’s floor footprint and seal the exhaust opening.

Check these details before buying

  1. Measure the room. Note sun exposure, ceiling height, adjoining open areas and insulation, then use current capacity guidance rather than buying the largest unit available.
  2. Check the window’s dimensions, opening direction, screen and sill strength. Confirm landlord, HOA or building rules before installing anything.
  3. If considering a portable AC, verify that the window bracket fits and the hose reaches the opening without kinks. Check whether the model is single-duct or dual-duct.
  4. Compare current standardized capacity and efficiency ratings. For portable models, check the applicable DOE test-based rating and the product’s energy information.
  5. Look at model-specific noise information and compressor design. Variable-speed, U-shaped and saddle-style designs may change the noise experience, but the result depends on the product.
  6. Estimate operating cost using your local electricity rate and likely annual hours. Treat published examples such as FEMP’s as scenarios, not predictions of your bill.
  7. Install and seal the unit according to its manufacturer’s instructions; gaps around a window kit or unit can cause air leakage.
