To drain a portable air conditioner, turn it off and unplug it, place a shallow pan beneath the lower drain, then carefully remove the cap and rubber plug. Let the reservoir empty, reinstall both fittings securely, and reconnect power. Drain locations and hose rules vary by model, so check your owner’s manual if your unit has multiple ports or a different setup.
How to drain a portable air conditioner
- Turn off and unplug the unit. This is the starting step in the TCL instructions and GE instructions.
- Locate the lower drain and position a pan beneath it. It is commonly near the bottom at the rear, but follow your manual if your model uses another access point. GE specifies a shallow pan of at least 1.5 quarts for its instructions; a larger container may be needed if your unit holds more water.
- Carefully remove the drain cap and rubber plug. Water may spill as soon as the plug is removed. Let it flow into the pan until it stops.
- Replace the rubber plug and cap securely. A loose or incorrectly tightened fitting can leak. DeLonghi also advises replacing the cap after draining to prevent water escaping during use.
- Reconnect power and resume operation if needed.
If you are unsure which port to use, do not open a drain based only on its position. Some models have separate outlets for different drainage arrangements.
Why does a portable AC collect water?
Cooling removes water vapor from room air, and that moisture condenses inside the appliance. Some portable ACs use collected water as part of heat rejection and send much of it out through the exhaust. In high humidity, or in modes that produce more condensate, the unit may collect more water than it can evaporate. When the tank-full warning appears, drain the unit according to its manual.
Should you use a drain hose or empty the tank manually?
Choose based on your model’s permitted ports and operating modes, whether gravity drainage is possible, and how practical it is to empty a pan or container. Drainage configurations differ: some models use different upper and lower outlets for different purposes.

How to set up continuous drainage
Use only the port and hose arrangement specified for your model. For gravity drainage, TCL says the hose must not rise above the drain outlet. Make sure the destination can safely hold or dispose of the water, and check the manual before leaving the hose connected.
Mode matters. TCL says a hose is required for Dry mode on the products covered by its guidance. For those products, it recommends replacing the cap in Cool or Eco mode for maximum performance; a reservoir may still fill in high humidity. Other models may support different arrangements, so do not treat this as a universal rule.

Drain the unit before storage
Empty remaining condensate before putting the appliance away. LG’s storage guidance says to turn off and unplug the unit, place a bowl beneath the drain, open the drain and rubber plugs, then close the fittings securely. LG also recommends running Fan mode with a window open for at least 30 minutes to dry the unit. Treat that drying step as LG-specific guidance: the page notes that its images or content may vary by model.
