Choose based on the work your vacuum must do: start with an upright if deep-cleaning carpet is the priority, a canister if you often clean stairs or above-floor surfaces, and a powerful stick if your home has bare floors only. Then compare the performance and handling of specific models; a vacuum’s category alone does not guarantee how well it will clean.
Start with your floors and cleaning tasks
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide offers useful category-level starting points, but it does not say every model in a category performs alike or prescribe one type for every home.
If deep-cleaning carpet is the priority, start with uprights
Consumer Reports advises: “If deep-cleaning carpet is the most important task on your list, go for an upright.” Treat that as a shortlist recommendation, not a substitute for checking the particular model’s carpet results. Also compare brush controls or pile adjustment, weight, and handling—especially if you will use the vacuum on different carpet types or carry it between floors.
If stairs and above-floor cleaning matter, consider a canister
A canister lets you move a hose and wand while the machine stays on the floor. Consumer Reports says canisters do well on drapes, upholstery, stairs, and under furniture. Check the supplied attachments and hose-and-wand reach against the jobs you actually have, along with the machine’s handling and weight.

If your home has bare floors only, a powerful stick may be enough
Consumer Reports says, “If you only have bare floors, a powerful stick vac could be your only vacuum.” The qualification matters: this is not a claim that every stick vacuum is suitable for every home. Compare the specific model’s bare-floor performance, handling, emissions, and its listed capacity or battery details.
If you have mixed flooring, compare model results on both surfaces
For a home with both carpet and bare floors, the guide does not name one universally best category. Compare a model’s results on both surfaces, then weigh its brush controls, weight, and ease of handling against the rooms and cleaning jobs it must cover.

Compare the specific model, not just its type
Consumer Reports evaluates separate dimensions that can help you make a more useful shortlist. Its tests include embedded sand pickup from medium-pile carpet; bare-floor pickup; fine-wood-flour emissions; ease of pushing, pulling, and carrying; pet-hair pickup from medium-pile carpet; and noise measured in decibels. Its described stick tests also include cereal and rice pickup on bare floors. These are the guide’s test methods, not tests conducted for this article.
- Carpet and bare-floor performance: Look at each surface that appears in your home, rather than assuming strength on one predicts strength on another.
- Handling and weight: Consider pushing and pulling across your rooms, carrying the machine on stairs, and maneuvering around furniture.
- Emissions: Check the model’s listed result if this is important in your household; the category name by itself does not establish an emissions outcome.
- Pet hair and noise: Compare these results if pet-hair pickup or operating noise is a regular concern.
- Features and tools: Match included brush controls and attachments to your floors and tasks. Consumer Reports says there is no need to pay extra for cleaning tools when the included standard tools suffice.
Consider how dust is disposed of
Consumer Reports warns that emptying bagless bins is usually dusty and messy and recommends against bagless models for people with asthma or allergies. Take that as the guide’s caution, not individualized medical advice or proof that every bagged model is appropriate. Compare the specific model’s emissions results and dust-disposal method rather than assuming its category guarantees a particular outcome.

Put the price figures in context
In its U.S.-oriented 2026 Buying Guide, Consumer Reports lists capable bagless uprights starting at about $200 and most canisters and bagged uprights at $240-plus. These are approximate guide-era prices, not verified current offers; prices and model availability can change. Compare current prices for the models that meet your needs rather than treating those figures as a quote or a ranking of value.
