The useful pick depends on what is giving your team trouble: spotting her before she attacks, surviving or disrupting her opening, or punishing her after she commits. Choose a hero whose current abilities address that specific problem, and weigh the pick’s value to your team beyond the Sombra matchup.
What changed in Sombra’s kit
Blizzard’s June 2026 patch notes say Hack was removed. Stealth became Ability 1, with its maximum duration increased from five to eight seconds and its movement-speed bonus increased from 60% to 75%. The same notes say Translocator’s projectile became slower and changed its arc; it no longer teleports Sombra on impact or timeout and instead persists on the ground. Virus has an eight-second cooldown and applies the Hacked state to enemies it hits. The Encrypted Upload perk lets Sombra throw Virus without breaking Stealth, then reveals her for three seconds; Viral Replication was changed so final blows reduce Virus’s cooldown by four seconds. Blizzard’s June 2026 patch notes are the relevant source for these changes.
Blizzard’s Sombra hero page still lists Hack, which conflicts with the June notes. Because the official page and dated balance notes disagree, do not rely on that ability list as a description of the post-rework kit. The latest dated patch-note result available here is September 17, 2026; it does not establish whether a later October update changed the hero.
How to choose a hero against Sombra
Think in terms of the problem you need to solve, not a fixed counter ranking. A pick can help your team notice Sombra, endure or interrupt her attack, or punish her when she commits or has spent mobility. A hero that helps with one of those jobs may still lose a direct duel; execution, coordination, map, mode and composition all affect the result.

- Need earlier warning? Favor abilities and positioning that help your team notice or reveal Sombra before she completes an attack. Share sightings and keep vulnerable teammates within help’s reach; awareness is more valuable when allies can act on it.
- Need to survive her opening? Look for tools that let you withstand, escape or disrupt the engagement. The aim is to deny Sombra a clean follow-up, not necessarily to chase her.
- Need to punish a commitment? Consider heroes with a reliable way to pressure an exposed Sombra or restrict her escape after she attacks. This depends on timing and aim, and it is less dependable if she retains a route out.
Before switching, check the hero’s live ability descriptions and ask whether the tool you intend to use actually addresses the matchup. A pick that contributes little to the rest of your team’s plan may cost more than it gains by focusing on Sombra.
Why there is no reliable universal counter ranking
The official materials cited here describe Sombra’s abilities and balance changes, but do not establish hero-versus-Sombra win rates or pick rates by rank, map, mode or team composition. A firm ordering of “best counters” would therefore imply evidence that is not available. Blizzard’s hero-design commentary says that heroes should have clear strengths and weaknesses and that their impact should be felt by both teams; that is a design principle supporting legible counterplay, not matchup data. Director’s Take – A Designer’s Journey into Sombra’s Rework attributes that statement to Hero Design Team member Andre Abrahamian.

For a practical decision, identify whether your team is losing to surprise, burst or escape, then select a hero whose live kit can address that weakness and remains useful in the broader match. Reassess if the map, mode or Sombra’s approach changes.
