Both are built for tactical transport and austere operations, but their published speed, payload and range figures use different conditions and variants. The useful choice depends on the mission, load and operating environment—not one headline statistic.
What is being compared?
The C-390 and C-130J overlap in tactical airlift roles, including moving cargo and personnel, airdrop and medical missions. This comparison uses the C-130J-30 where the source specifically identifies that stretched variant; its figures should not automatically be applied to every C-130J-family aircraft. Embraer uses both C-390 and KC-390 naming. Its KC-390 materials include tanker functions, which apply to an aircraft configured for air-to-air refueling rather than every C-390.
How do their propulsion and speed differ?
The C-390 uses two IAE V2500-E5 turbofan engines, according to Embraer. Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) data identifies four Rolls-Royce AE2100D3 turboprops on the C-130J-30. That is a clear difference in propulsion architecture, but it does not by itself establish comparative operating cost, runway performance or mission suitability.
| Aircraft and source | Published speed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| C-390; Embraer brochure | Maximum cruise speed: 470 KTAS / Mach 0.80 | Manufacturer-published maximum cruise figure. |
| C-130J-30; RAAF aircraft page | Cruise speed: 643 km/h | RAAF figure; the page’s figure is not identified as a standardized comparison test against the C-390. |
| C-130J-30; Lockheed Martin aircraft page | 410 mph / 356 ktas at 22,000 feet | Lockheed’s stated speed and altitude conditions differ in presentation from the Embraer brochure figure. |
These are not measurements presented under a common test method or identical conditions. They show the published figures, not a controlled ranking of which aircraft is faster in every operating profile.

Which aircraft carries more?
Maximum payload is not a single directly comparable number here. Embraer distinguishes concentrated from distributed load for the C-390, while the C-130J sources give payload figures for the C-130J-30 without that same distinction.
| Aircraft and source | Published payload figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| C-390; Embraer brochure | 26 metric tons concentrated; 23 metric tons distributed | These are separate maximum-load figures with different load distributions. |
| C-130J-30; RAAF aircraft page | 19,500 kg | RAAF figure for the C-130J-30. |
| C-130J-30; Lockheed Martin aircraft page | 44,000 lb maximum allowable payload | Lockheed figure for the C-130J-30; it is a different source and unit from the RAAF figure. |
A payload limit alone does not tell you whether a particular vehicle, pallet arrangement or other cargo will fit. Load distribution, aircraft configuration and the cargo hold’s dimensions matter alongside weight.

How do range figures compare at specified loads?
Range changes with payload, and the published figures below do not all describe the same condition. In particular, an empty-aircraft range or a ferry range should not be compared as if it were a range with a specified cargo load.
| Aircraft and source | Published range | Condition stated by the source |
|---|---|---|
| C-390; Embraer brochure | 1,080 nm | With a 26-metric-ton payload. |
| C-390; Embraer brochure | 1,470 nm | With a 23-metric-ton payload. |
| C-390; Embraer brochure | 3,370 nm | Ferry range, not a range at either of the listed payloads. |
| C-130J-30; Lockheed Martin aircraft page | 2,390 nm | With a 40,000-lb payload. |
| C-130J-30; RAAF aircraft page | 6,852 km | With no payload. |
The figures show why range needs a load condition: the RAAF’s no-payload C-130J-30 figure and Lockheed’s loaded figure answer different questions, just as the C-390’s ferry range differs from its payload-range figures. They do not establish a universal range winner.

What can each aircraft carry and how is cargo delivered?
C-390 cargo arrangements
Embraer describes its Cargo Handling and Aerial Delivery System (CHADS) as supporting vehicles, 463L pallets, Type V platforms, Container Delivery System (CDS) bundles and automatic airdrop. Its product page lists capacity for up to seven 463L pallets, 24 CDS bundles or one helicopter the size of a Black Hawk. For medical configurations, Embraer lists up to 80 litters.
C-130J-30 cargo arrangements
Lockheed Martin lists up to eight pallets for the C-130J-30, alongside alternative troop, litter and CDS configurations. The RAAF lists capacity for up to 124 passengers or eight pallets. These are alternative configurations, not simultaneous capacities.

The pallet counts do not settle which aircraft can carry a particular shipment. For a specific vehicle or load plan, compare the hold dimensions, loading limits, tie-down arrangement and aircraft configuration against the cargo’s dimensions and weight.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can both operate from austere or unpaved runways?
Yes, both manufacturers or operators describe capability for demanding runway environments, but those descriptions are not proof of equal performance at every airfield. Embraer says the KC-390 is designed for semi-prepared or damaged runways and varied environments. The RAAF says the C-130J-30 can deliver to short, unsurfaced runways; Lockheed emphasizes the C-130J-30’s short-field performance.

- Revell Plastic Model Airplane Kit #85-5512 is skill level 4 and contains 147 parts. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
- 1:48 scale model, Length 14-1/4", Wingspan 16.75"
- Crew figures and weighted tires. Machine guns mounted in glass nose.
- Decals included to build one of two variants from the 345th Bomb Group, the Air Apaches.
- Molded in light gray and clear. Paint and glue not included.
Whether an aircraft can use a particular strip depends on conditions such as runway surface and length, aircraft load and operational circumstances. The broad capability statements do not specify a single shared test condition that would make the two claims directly comparable.
Which missions and configurations matter?
Both aircraft support transport, airdrop and medical missions. Embraer also describes search and rescue and aerial refueling for the KC-390 tanker configuration. The RAAF lists transport, airdrop, search and survivor assistance, and medical evacuation for the C-130J-30; the wider C-130 family also has specialized variants.
For a mission comparison, identify the actual aircraft and equipment configuration first. A tanker role belongs to a suitably configured KC-390, while capabilities associated with specialized C-130 variants should not be assumed for every C-130J-30.
What do fleet history and adoption figures tell you?
Embraer reported in 2025 that the C-390 had been selected by 11 air forces and cited a mission-completion rate above 99%. Those are manufacturer-reported figures, not an independent comparison with C-130J operations. Selection count and a reported completion rate also do not, on their own, establish equivalent fleet size, service history, availability or lifecycle cost across the two aircraft.
Quick Recap
How should you choose between them?
- Start with the load: establish cargo dimensions, weight, distribution, pallet or platform needs, and passenger or litter configuration.
- Check the actual route: compare range at the intended payload and account for the operating conditions, rather than relying on ferry or no-payload range.
- Assess the airfield: validate runway conditions and aircraft limits for the intended load; broad austere-runway claims are not a substitute for mission planning.
- Specify the variant and equipment: distinguish the C-130J-30 from other C-130J variants and the C-390 transport configuration from a KC-390 tanker configuration.
- Compare the fleet’s needs: evaluate mission systems, support arrangements and lifecycle costs using comparable, fleet-specific evidence. The cited headline specifications do not provide a like-for-like lifecycle-cost comparison.
