First, tell Edge’s webpage translator apart from its PDF translator
Microsoft documents two different experiences. For a webpage, Edge can show a Translate icon in the address bar, and its webpage translation setting is under Settings > Languages. The setting is called “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language I read.” Microsoft’s webpage instructions do not say this setting controls the separate PDF toolbar feature, so changing it is not a confirmed way to restore PDF translation. Translate selected text using Edge’s PDF toolbar
Microsoft describes the PDF workflow as selecting text in an open PDF and choosing the Translate icon in the PDF toolbar. The translation appears in a side pane when you highlight text. Microsoft says the pane supports over 70 languages; the feature description does not state which Edge installations have it. Microsoft Edge PDF reader features.
- Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge.
- Select the text you want to translate.
- Choose the Translate icon in the PDF toolbar.
- Highlight the text to view its translation in the side pane.
Microsoft also says translated text can be read aloud or copied. This is a selected-text workflow, not a documented promise to translate every page of a PDF at once.

If the Translate control is missing or does not work
Microsoft’s reviewed feature and support pages explain how to use PDF translation, but do not specify why the toolbar control might be absent, which versions, platforms, regions, or account types include it, or how to restore a missing or failing control. There is therefore no confirmed repair procedure to recommend from those instructions.
For a practical workaround, choose a documented alternative based on what you need translated and the file’s condition. Google Translate offers a desktop workflow for eligible PDFs; Adobe documents translation of an entire PDF, a single page, or selected text. Their requirements and limitations differ, as outlined below.

Use Google Translate for an eligible PDF on a computer
Google Translate’s document workflow supports PDF files up to 10 MB and 300 pages. It is unavailable on smaller screens and mobile. Google also warns that text contained in images or scanned PDF pages may appear in the translated output without being translated. Google Translate Help: Translate documents & websites.
- On a computer, open Google Translate and select the Documents tab.
- Choose the source language or Detect language, then choose the target language.
- Upload the PDF and select the option to translate it.
- Download the translated document.
If the PDF is a scan or its text is embedded in page images, this route may leave that text untranslated. A file that exceeds Google’s stated size or page limit, or a phone or small-screen device, also falls outside the documented workflow.

Use Adobe for a full PDF, one page, or selected text
Adobe Help documents a workflow that starts in Acrobat and opens Adobe Express for translation. You can choose whether to translate all pages, one page, or specific text, select target languages, and choose a formal or informal tone. After previewing the result, you can download or share the translated PDF. Adobe’s help article was last updated 17 August 2026. Adobe Help: Translate PDFs with Acrobat.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat.
- Select Convert, then choose Translate this PDF to open Adobe Express.
- Choose the target language or languages and select all pages, one page, or specific text.
- Choose a tone if needed, preview the translation, then download or share the PDF.
Adobe says translation may be skipped for scanned, secured, large, or complex PDFs, or files with unsupported fonts or languages. It does not provide a single threshold for “large” in the cited help article. Adobe’s broader guide also describes an Acrobat AI Assistant route; availability and plan requirements should be checked with Adobe before relying on that option. Machine translation should not be treated as verified for consequential use. For an important document, have a qualified person review the result; Adobe specifically advises reviewing and editing its translation.
