Redshift materialized views stored in Iceberg can be useful only if the source format, refresh plan, and view definition fit the feature’s constraints. Check those three gates before building downstream workloads around the view: Iceberg v3 sources are not supported, refreshes are manual, and some query definitions require a full recomputation rather than an incremental update.
Can Redshift create materialized views on Iceberg v3?
No. AWS specifies that an Iceberg materialized view’s source tables must use Iceberg format version 2 or lower; Redshift cannot create materialized views on Iceberg v3 tables. This restriction applies even where the Redshift deployment otherwise supports Iceberg v3.
With USING ICEBERG, Redshift writes the materialized-view data as Parquet files in Iceberg format in Amazon S3 and registers it in the AWS Glue Data Catalog. The source tables must themselves be Iceberg tables: non-Iceberg tables cannot be used as sources. Confirm the source table’s format version and table type before designing the view around it.
AWS documents Iceberg v3 availability for Redshift Serverless except 4 RPU, and for provisioned clusters using RG instance types. That deployment eligibility does not make v3 sources valid for materialized views. Service support can change; check AWS’s current Iceberg v3 and materialized-view documentation for your deployment before implementation. How fresh is a Redshift materialized view on Iceberg?
A query against a materialized view returns the data stored as of its latest completed refresh. Changes to the base tables remain invisible to consumers until a later refresh completes. Iceberg materialized views do not support AUTO REFRESH, so plan an explicit manual refresh cadence or trigger and monitor whether each refresh succeeds.
Set a freshness expectation that downstream users can understand—for example, identify when the view was last refreshed and how often refreshes are intended to run. Do not assume that standard Redshift materialized-view behavior applies: ordinary materialized views can use automatic refresh, but AWS says its timing may be delayed to prioritize workload. AWS recommends manual or scheduled refresh when more deterministic timing is required; that standard-MV behavior does not enable auto refresh for Iceberg views.

Which SQL queries support incremental refresh?
For Iceberg materialized views, AWS documents only COUNT and SUM as supported aggregate functions for incremental refresh. A definition that includes an ineligible construct receives a full refresh instead. A full refresh reruns the defining query, so its workload cost can differ substantially from applying only incremental changes.

Check the complete view definition against AWS’s current eligibility rules, then observe the refresh mode and outcome on the deployed cluster. AWS does not provide a workload-specific performance comparison that can predict the cost or duration of your view; measure it with your query and data.
What happens when an Iceberg snapshot expires?
If snapshots recorded at the previous refresh are no longer available, snapshot expiration can force full recomputation at the next refresh. Treat snapshot retention as part of the materialized view’s operating design: coordinate it with refresh cadence and the recovery time and compute you can accommodate.

AWS’s external data-lake materialized-view guidance says Iceberg refresh can handle up to 4 million positions deleted in a single data file. After that limit is reached, the Iceberg base table must be compacted to continue refreshing. AWS does not state a publication year for this limit in the cited guidance; verify the current limit and compaction guidance before relying on it.

- The source tables and materialized view must be in the same AWS account and Region.
- Identifiers must be lowercase.
enable_case_sensitive_identifiermust not be true during creation or refresh.- Lake Formation filtered (FGAC) tables cannot be source tables.
- The caller needs
ALTERpermission on the materialized view. - The definer IAM role needs
SELECTpermission on every source table.
Creation and refresh also do not support concurrency scaling. For data-lake tables, AWS lists automatic query rewrite and automated materialized views as unsupported, so do not build a design that depends on those capabilities.
How should multiple Redshift clusters handle refreshes?
When multiple Redshift clusters attempt to refresh the same Iceberg materialized view, Redshift coordinates through optimistic concurrency control in AWS Glue Data Catalog. Only one refresh succeeds; a cluster’s attempt can abort if another cluster finishes first. In multi-cluster operations, define which process owns routine refreshes and how an aborted attempt is detected and retried.
Is an Iceberg materialized view a fit for this workload?
Use the feature when the source tables meet the format and deployment constraints, the view’s stored-result freshness is acceptable with a manual refresh plan, and the team can accommodate the refresh mode its definition requires. If incremental eligibility matters to cost or runtime, validate the exact SQL and observe its behavior on the target workload before committing to a service-level expectation. Include snapshot retention, compaction, permissions, and cross-cluster retry ownership in the operating plan rather than treating refresh as a one-time setup detail.
