A Bluetooth tracker can help you ring something nearby or show a location reported by a nearby compatible phone; it is not a live GPS tracker.
Start with your phone and the finding network
A tracker’s network determines which phones can help report its location when it is away from you. Apple Find My, Google Find Hub, and Samsung SmartThings Find are separate ecosystems. A tracker intended for one is not automatically usable with another.
Can one tracker work with both Android and iPhone?
Some third-party trackers can be set up for either Apple or Google’s network, but that does not mean the same tracker uses both networks at once. Chipolo says its trackers connect to one network at a time, and Apple Find My and Google Find Hub operate independently. Check the exact tracker’s current compatibility and the setup requirements for your phone before buying; “works with Android and iPhone” can describe a choice between networks, not simultaneous cross-network tracking.
For a household with different phone types, decide whose phone will manage the tracker and which network matters for finding it. Then verify the exact model’s supported network, phone requirements, and regional availability. Do not choose on the assumption that every nearby Android or iPhone can relay a tag’s location.

Bluetooth trackers are not real-time GPS
A tag broadcasts a Bluetooth signal. When your phone is close enough, its app can help you find or ring the tag. When it is farther away, a compatible device in the relevant finding network may detect the signal and report a location. If no participating device passes near the item, the app may show only its last known location.
That makes two different capabilities easy to confuse:

- Nearby finding: Bluetooth helps your phone locate or ring a tag within radio range. Walls, objects, and the surrounding environment can affect that range.
- Distant location reporting: The finding network depends on nearby participating devices to detect and report the tag. It is not a continuous feed from the tag itself.
Chipolo states that “the tracker itself relies entirely on Bluetooth to communicate with nearby devices.” That is the company’s description of its trackers, not an independent test. Neither a crowd-finding network nor a more precise nearby-finding feature turns a Bluetooth tag into a GPS-and-cellular device that continuously reports its own coordinates.
Match the shape and attachment to the item

A comparison guide reviewed on August 14, 2026, lists Galaxy SmartTag2 with a built-in loop, Chipolo ONE Point with a built-in hole, and Pebblebee Clip 5 with a carabiner. Treat those as model-specific examples, not a substitute for checking the current product listing: designs, included accessories, and availability can change.

Separate nearby precision from distant updates
Basic Bluetooth ringing is useful when you are already close to the missing item. Ultra-wideband (UWB) or Channel Sounding can provide additional directional or distance-finding help nearby, but only when the tracker and a compatible phone support the feature. Check compatibility for the exact model and phone rather than assuming that all phones can use a tracker’s precision feature.
These technologies address the final nearby search; they do not make distant crowd-network reports continuous. If the item is far away, the finding network still needs a participating device to detect the tag.

Compare attachment, battery, and upkeep
The examples below distinguish manufacturer specifications from guaranteed everyday performance. Chipolo’s stated endurance, alarm, and resistance figures are company claims, not comparative independent test results.

Rechargeable models avoid replacing a coin cell but need a charging routine. Replaceable-cell models avoid recharging but require a compatible replacement when the battery runs down. “Up to” battery life is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise of the same duration in every use pattern.

Think about placement and durability
For a bag or suitcase, secure the tag inside or attach it where it cannot easily fall off. Chipolo says fabric and plastic cases are not expected to block its signal, while aluminum and RFID-blocking material can severely weaken or block Bluetooth. A metal enclosure or RFID-blocking sleeve can therefore undermine finding even if the tracker and phone are otherwise compatible.
Check the exact model’s water- and dust-resistance rating if the item may get wet or take knocks. A rating such as IP67 is a model specification, not a guarantee that every tracker is suitable for every exposure or placement. Bluetooth range is also affected by obstructions and the environment, so treat manufacturer range claims as estimates rather than assured real-world distances.
Why location updates vary by place
A 2025 study by HyunSeok Daniel Jang, Hazem Ibrahim, Rohail Asim, Matteo Varvello, and Yasir Zaki examined AirTag, SmartTag, and Tile in controlled and in-the-wild settings. It recruited 22 volunteers traveling across 29 countries and reported that the density of companion devices was a primary determinant of tag performance. The study helps explain why a tag’s distant-location usefulness can vary with its surroundings; it is not a universal ranking of every current tracker, product lineup, or region.

- Confirm the finding network. Match the tracker to the phone and network you intend to use, and check whether it can use one network at a time or offers another setup option.
- Choose a shape for the item. Prefer a card for a wallet, an integrated loop or hole for keys, and a secure placement for a bag or suitcase.
