A Fujifilm Film Simulation is a base image rendering; a Film Simulation recipe combines that look with other image-quality settings. The recipe is applied to the in-camera JPEG, not to a RAW file recorded at the same time. Choose JPEG for the finished look, RAW for later development, or JPEG+RAW to keep both.

What is a Fujifilm Film Simulation recipe?

A Film Simulation is Fujifilm’s analogue-inspired rendering profile. A recipe starts with a selected Film Simulation and adds image-quality settings to shape the JPEG’s appearance. You can save the combination as a custom setting for recall later.

Depending on the camera, recipe settings may include Grain Effect, Clarity, Color Chrome, and Color Chrome FX Blue. Grain Effect changes the appearance of grain, while Clarity adjusts detail definition. A recipe may also specify exposure choices such as ISO or exposure compensation; those are shooting decisions, not a guarantee that the look will suit every subject or lighting condition.

FUJIFILM X Series & GFX Learning Centre explains how to access Film Simulation recipes, and Fujifilm’s recipe guidance describes the settings used to build them.

Do Film Simulation recipes affect RAW files?

No. The selected recipe determines the camera-rendered JPEG look; a simultaneously recorded RAW file remains available for later development without that recipe applied to the RAW data. Fujifilm’s guidance puts it plainly: “If you’re using a Film Simulation recipe, make sure you are recording JPEG images, as your recipe will have no effect on the RAW file.”

That does not prevent you from using a Film Simulation while shooting RAW. With JPEG+RAW selected, the JPEG carries the in-camera rendering and the RAW file is retained for later processing. Fujifilm’s X RAW STUDIO can develop RAW files using a connected camera’s processor and reproduce its tone, color reproduction, and Film Simulations. Its listed software releases run through October 2025; check Fujifilm’s current download page for your camera and operating-system compatibility.

FUJIFILM X-T30 III Mirrorless Camera Body, with XC13-33mm Lens Kit, Charcoal Silver
  • Built for ease of use with Auto mode to keep you in the moment
  • Dial in your style with endless creativity powered by 20 built in Film Simulations
  • Timeless design in a remarkably compact body
  • Stay sharp when it counts with AI-powered subject detection autofocus
  • Experience the freedom to explore with the new FUJINON XC13-33mmF3.5-6.3 OIS kit lens

This establishes Fujifilm’s own camera-rendering route; it does not establish that every third-party RAW application reproduces every Film Simulation identically.

Should you shoot JPEG, RAW, or both?

Format choice Recipe look ready in camera? Later processing flexibility Storage and handling
JPEG only (FINE or NORMAL) Yes No RAW original is retained One image file per shot
RAW only No recipe-rendered JPEG is saved Yes; develop the RAW later RAW files to manage
JPEG+RAW (FINE+RAW or NORMAL+RAW) Yes, in the JPEG Yes, through the separately saved RAW Both files to store and manage

These format choices are described in Fujifilm’s JPEG-versus-RAW guidance. The practical trade-off is whether you value an immediately usable rendering, the option to develop later, or both—and whether your storage and file workflow can accommodate the choice.

FUJIFILM X-T5 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body - Black
  • 40.2 Megapixel X-Trans CMOS 5 HR BSI Imaging Sensor
  • 15 Frames per second in Mechanical Shutter
  • Up to 7 stops of Internal Body Image Stabilization (IBIS)
  • 160MP pixel shift multi shot
  • 1/180,000 Max Shutter Speed in Electronic Shutter

Burst capacity is also camera- and setting-specific. In a Fujifilm Learning Centre example published in 2026, the X-T30 III’s electronic shutter at 20 fps records 23 uncompressed RAW files versus 127 JPEGs. Those figures apply to that camera and stated format and shutter conditions; they are not a general buffer guarantee for every X-T model, setting, or card configuration. See Fujifilm’s JPEG/RAW article for the example.

How to save a recipe on an X-T camera

Custom-setting banks are the general approach, but names, controls, available settings, and access methods vary between X-T models. Follow the instructions for your specific camera before relying on a button sequence.

  1. Open Image Quality Setting.
  2. Choose Edit/Save Custom Setting and select or create a bank.
  3. Open Edit/Check, choose the base Film Simulation, and set the image-quality options in the recipe.
  4. Save the custom setting and rename it if desired.
  5. Select the saved setting when you want to use that recipe. Some models without a mode dial allow selection through the Q menu.

Fujifilm’s general recipe-access guide describes the custom-setting workflow. Do not assume every body offers the same number of banks or the same shortcut.

X-T30 III example: FS1–FS3 dial slots

The X-T30 III has a Film Simulation dial with recipe slots labeled FS1–FS3. For this model, Fujifilm directs users to Image Quality Setting > Film Simulation Dial Setting, select a slot, turn FS Recipe on, and then choose the recipe settings. The dial’s C position allows Film Simulation selection through custom settings. This is an X-T30 III procedure, not a universal X-T menu path. Consult Fujifilm’s X-T30 III guide for that body.

Choose a workflow that fits the photograph

  • Use JPEG only when you want the recipe-rendered image ready to share and do not need to keep a RAW file.
  • Use RAW only when you intend to develop the image later and do not need an in-camera recipe JPEG.
  • Use JPEG+RAW when you want an immediate recipe look and the option to revisit the image from RAW, and can manage the additional files.

Recipe controls and shortcuts depend on the camera body: available Film Simulations and image-quality settings, custom banks or dial slots, and menu access can differ. Check the manual for your exact X-T model before following model-specific instructions.
