After a sharp rally, evaluate memory and storage stocks by asking whether earnings can hold up across a full cycle—not by extrapolating the latest quarter or ranking companies by their share-price gains. AI demand and constrained supply are boosting reported results, but those conditions alone do not show that these businesses have escaped cyclicality. The key is to separate each company’s products and profit drivers, then test valuation against more normal earnings and cash flow.
What does the rally tell you—and what doesn’t it?
Alea Research reported that an equal-weight basket of SanDisk, Micron, Western Digital and Seagate returned 511% from October 1, 2025, through August 26, 2026. Its reported returns for those same dates varied widely: SanDisk 1,140%, Micron 416%, Western Digital 259.6% and Seagate 231.2%. The figures describe that specific historical period, not performance through October 7, 2026.
The basket’s return indicates a broad rally, while the spread among constituents shows why “memory and storage” should not be treated as one trade. A past return does not establish what a stock is worth today. The available figures also do not establish October 7 share prices, consensus estimates or comparable current valuation multiples, so they cannot support a claim that one company is cheapest.
What businesses are you actually comparing?
Memory and storage serve related data-center needs, but their products, customers and economics differ. Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 SEC filing describes DRAM as volatile memory used across data centers, PCs, graphics, mobile, industrial and automotive markets. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is a stacked DRAM architecture. NAND is nonvolatile memory used in SSDs and other markets. Western Digital, after its flash-business separation, and Seagate are storage businesses with their own demand and margin drivers.

| Company | Exposure to assess | Questions to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Micron (MU) | DRAM, HBM, NAND and storage products | How much of earnings comes from product mix and advanced products versus tight pricing? What are capital spending needs, supply constraints and the likely effect of normalized pricing on margins and cash flow? |
| Western Digital (WDC) | Storage business following the flash separation | How durable are storage demand and margins? Assess free cash flow, customer concentration, debt and guidance. Do not combine its post-separation results with Sandisk’s. |
| Seagate (STX) | Mass-capacity data storage, including cloud demand | Is revenue and margin growth translating into sustained free cash flow? Examine debt paydown, capital returns and the durability of cloud demand. |
| Sandisk (SNDK) | Flash business separated from Western Digital | Use Sandisk’s own dated accounts and current market data for a standalone analysis. Western Digital’s separation announcement does not establish Sandisk’s latest valuation. |
Western Digital completed the separation of its Flash business into Sandisk in February 2025, according to Western Digital’s fiscal Q4 2026 release. That makes the date and reporting perimeter important: comparisons that combine pre-separation Western Digital results with post-separation results can misstate what each business earns.
What do recent results say about current conditions?
The figures below come from different fiscal periods and company releases. They are useful evidence about each issuer’s reported performance, not a like-for-like ranking: the businesses, reporting periods and—in some cases—accounting bases differ.

Micron reported in its fiscal Q3 2026 filing that AI-driven data-center demand for memory and storage was growing faster than industry supply, with constrained supply contributing to higher prices and improved profitability. The fiscal Q4 segment margins and Q1 guidance show why investors should examine how much current earnings depend on a favorable supply-and-pricing environment. They do not establish how long that environment will last.
Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said in the company’s July 28, 2026 earnings release, “Our performance is being driven by robust cloud data center demand and disciplined execution, and we see the momentum continuing in 2027.” The release also described long-term demand for mass-capacity storage as benefiting from AI-driven data generation and its value. Those are management’s views, not independent confirmation or a guarantee of future results.

How can you test whether earnings are sustainable?
Start with the source of recent profit growth, then ask what happens when the conditions behind it change. This is especially important when reported margins are unusually high or supply is constrained: trailing earnings may not represent a mid-cycle earning rate. That is a valuation question, not a forecast that prices or margins must fall.
- Separate volume, price and mix. Determine whether stronger revenue and margin performance reflects more units sold, higher prices, a shift toward products such as HBM, or a combination. The answer matters because each driver can persist for a different length of time.
- Stress-test a less favorable cycle. Consider a scenario in which pricing, utilization or product mix retreats from current conditions. Estimate what that would mean for operating margins, earnings and cash generation; do not simply carry peak results forward.
- Include the cost of capacity and technology. Assess the spending required to add supply and maintain technology leadership. Higher revenue is not equivalent to durable free cash flow if the business must reinvest heavily to sustain it.
- Compare cash generation with accounting profit. Review operating or free cash flow alongside earnings, and distinguish GAAP from non-GAAP measures. Where a company reports both, identify which adjustments separate the non-GAAP figure from GAAP results rather than treating them as interchangeable.
- Adjust for the balance sheet and share count. Compare cash, debt, net debt, share count and capital returns alongside headline EPS. EPS alone can obscure leverage or changes in the number of shares.
- Value the business on normalized results. Compare enterprise value and equity value with a reasoned mid-cycle earnings and free-cash-flow estimate, not just with the most recent quarter. Enterprise value incorporates the financing claims of debt and cash; equity value is the value attributable to shareholders.
Keep the assumptions visible. If your normalized case depends on current high prices, a particular product mix or sustained utilization, say so in your own analysis. A valuation is only as useful as the operating assumptions beneath it.

How should you interpret management guidance and risk?
Guidance is a company forecast for a stated fiscal period, not a realized result. Preserve the period, range and accounting basis when using it, and do not compare a GAAP number at one company directly with a non-GAAP number at another without reconciling the difference.
- Micron’s filing identifies memory and storage demand, supply and pricing as changing conditions; its report of demand running ahead of supply is a snapshot of the conditions it described.
- Western Digital lists demand volatility, competition and pricing, supply-chain execution, debt and customer relationships among risks to its outlook.
- Seagate says its guidance rests on current assumptions and actual results may differ materially. It also says future dividends depend on its financial position, cash flow, capital requirements and other factors.
These risks do not establish that the cycle will turn at a particular time. They identify what to monitor when deciding whether a company’s present earnings power is likely to persist.

What evidence would make the comparison stronger?
For a current valuation decision, use up-to-date share prices and company filings or releases covering the same reporting periods. For Sandisk, obtain its own standalone accounts rather than infer current results or valuation from Western Digital’s separation. Then apply a consistent method across the names: aligned fiscal periods where possible, comparable GAAP or reconciled non-GAAP measures, and explicit assumptions for mid-cycle margins, reinvestment and cash flow.
Without those current inputs, the dated rally figures and selected company results can frame the questions but cannot settle which stock offers the best value.
