If Windows reports less usable memory than the amount of RAM installed, first check Task Manager → Performance → Memory and note the Hardware reserved figure. Then check whether Windows has an unintended boot memory limit and whether BIOS or UEFI detects all installed memory. The difference may be an intentional graphics reservation, a Windows setting, or a firmware or memory-module issue; the right fix depends on your PC.
What “installed,” “usable” and “hardware reserved” mean
Installed RAM is the physical memory in the computer. Usable memory is what Windows can use; hardware-reserved memory is set aside for devices or system functions rather than made available to Windows. These figures help narrow down the cause, but the reserved amount alone does not identify a fault, and there is no universal normal amount that applies to every PC.
To inspect the figures, open Task Manager → Performance → Memory. Record the displayed memory and the Hardware reserved value. A Microsoft Learn community thread points users to this view when investigating an installed-versus-usable discrepancy: “Installed RAM : 8.00 (4.95 usable)”. The amounts in that thread describe one user’s computer, not a general benchmark.
Check whether Windows has a boot memory limit
Windows System Configuration includes a Maximum memory option. If it was selected intentionally for diagnosis, it can limit the memory Windows uses. If you did not set a limit, check that the option is clear.

- Press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and press Enter.
- Open the Boot tab and select Advanced options.
- Check whether Maximum memory is selected. If you do not intend to impose a diagnostic limit, clear the checkbox.
- Select OK, apply the change, and restart Windows. Then check Task Manager → Performance → Memory again.
Do not type an arbitrary number into Maximum memory as a repair. Clearing this limit will not free RAM that firmware reserves for integrated graphics, as noted in a Microsoft Learn community answer about changing maximum memory usage.
See whether integrated graphics are reserving RAM
Some PCs with integrated graphics set aside system memory for graphics buffers. That allocation can appear as hardware-reserved memory, so a difference between installed and usable RAM does not automatically mean a module is missing or defective.

Some firmware offers a graphics-memory control named something like UMA Frame Buffer Size; others do not. If your PC exposes such a setting, consult its manual before changing it. Reducing the allocation may affect graphics capability, and the available evidence does not establish a universal recommended value or quantify that trade-off. The setting’s name, location and availability vary by model.
Compare the memory detected by BIOS or UEFI with Windows
Restart the PC and enter BIOS or UEFI using the method specified by its manufacturer. Check how much memory the firmware detects, then compare it with the installed modules and Windows’ figures.

- Firmware detects the expected capacity, but Windows has less usable memory: check the Windows boot limit and Hardware reserved figure. A graphics reservation may explain part of the difference.
- Firmware detects less than the installed capacity: investigate whether a module is seated correctly, compatible with the system, or faulty. Follow the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions for checking modules and slots.
- The figures remain unclear: consult support information for the exact PC or motherboard model. Firmware menus and supported memory configurations differ.

Do not buy a replacement module based only on the amount Windows reports as usable. First identify the exact PC or motherboard and verify its supported memory configuration, including memory generation, form factor and capacity limits. Replace RAM only when checks point to a failed or incompatible module, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for any physical inspection or reseating.

Why there is no single BIOS fix
Memory reservations and firmware controls depend on the individual computer. A setting found on one PC may not exist on another, and a low usable-memory figure by itself does not show whether the cause is a graphics allocation, a Windows limit, firmware detection or a module problem. Avoid changing unrelated firmware settings or applying a generic memory-remapping fix without guidance for your model.
