Your motherboard’s memory slots must match the RAM generation, and the processor and board must support the configuration. If you’re asking “DDR5 vs. DDR4 RAM: which should I choose?”, start by checking your exact motherboard and CPU—not by choosing the newer label. DDR5 offers more bandwidth, but its performance advantage depends on the workload and the specific kits compared.
Can I upgrade from DDR4 to DDR5?
Usually, changing generations means changing platforms, not just replacing memory modules. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are physically and electrically different and are not interchangeable. A DDR4 motherboard cannot be made DDR5-compatible by installing DDR5 RAM.
Some processor families support either generation at the platform level, but a particular motherboard uses one memory type. For example, Intel says its 12th-generation desktop processors support DDR5-4800 or DDR4-3200 and use LGA1700 with Intel 600-series desktop chipset boards. Those processor-level options do not mean one board accepts both generations: check the exact board model and SKU in its documentation. Intel’s 12th-generation desktop processor compatibility information was last reviewed July 2, 2025.
For AMD, Kingston’s platform summary describes Socket AM4 (Ryzen 1000–5000 series) as DDR4 and Socket AM5 (Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series) as DDR5-only. Because processor and motherboard lineups evolve, verify the exact CPU and board documentation rather than relying on a platform-family shortcut. Kingston’s DDR4 and DDR5 platform summary was accessed October 7, 2026; the retrieved passage does not state a publication date.

Will DDR5 work in my motherboard? Check before buying
- Identify the exact computer or motherboard. Use the system model or motherboard model and revision, not just the brand or chipset family. Check the manual or manufacturer specifications for supported memory generation, DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, maximum capacity, slot limits, and supported configurations.
- Confirm the processor’s memory support. Check the exact CPU model and platform documentation. A CPU family may have DDR4 and DDR5 board variants, while each board supports only its specified memory type.
- Choose a validated kit and configuration. Check capacity, module count, data rate, timings, and the motherboard maker’s qualified vendor list (QVL). For AMD systems, the AMD Ryzen Processor Overclocked Memory Compatibility List identifies kits tested for rated speed and latency and marks EXPO or XMP compatibility. Use it alongside the board maker’s QVL and current BIOS support for your CPU and board.
- Plan how the modules will be populated. Follow the motherboard manual’s slot order and use matched modules as a kit. Intel advises using identical DIMM part numbers within a channel when targeting the specified memory speed; mixing different part numbers in a channel can reduce speed or prevent booting. Its guidance covers both DDR4 and DDR5. Intel’s 600-series memory installation guidance was last reviewed January 20, 2022.
- Compare the full upgrade cost and purpose. If your desired generation requires a new motherboard and CPU as well as RAM, weigh the complete platform change against the workload benefit. Check current local prices; there is no price premium established here that applies across regions and retailers.
DDR5 vs. DDR4 performance: what the comparisons show
DDR5 provides higher bandwidth, but the generation label alone does not predict how much faster a PC will feel. Memory speed and timings, processor, application, and test configuration all affect results.
In a 2025 Tom’s Hardware test using an Intel Core i9-12900K and DDR4 and DDR5 versions of MSI’s MAG Z690 Tomahawk WiFi motherboard, DDR5-4800 C40 was 14% faster overall than DDR4-3200 C22 and 9% faster overall than DDR4-3200 C15. The same test reported a 19% lead over DDR4-2133 C15; the advantage narrowed further against DDR4-4000 C16. These are results from that publication’s particular configurations, not a promised uplift for other systems. Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 DDR5-versus-DDR4 comparison reports the test setup and results.

Results also differed by application in that comparison: Tom’s Hardware measured a 28% DDR5 advantage in its Lightroom comparison, while the differences in Photoshop and Premiere were below 1% and 3%, respectively. For everyday Microsoft Office tasks, the spread between its best and worst memory configurations was 4%. A bandwidth-sensitive task may respond differently from an application that is less constrained by memory performance.
Gaming results need the same care. A separate Tom’s Hardware test published in 2026 examined 15 games on Intel LGA1700 CPUs with an RTX 5090 at 1080p settings, chosen to emphasize CPU differences. It found that the DDR4 penalty varied by processor and game. Its averages and individual results describe that test suite and hardware, not a universal gaming percentage. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 Intel LGA1700 gaming comparison provides the specific results.

Memory kits, XMP, and EXPO: speed settings to understand
A kit’s advertised data rate may depend on enabling a memory profile in firmware. Support depends on the memory kit, motherboard, and CPU, and a profile setting is not the same as a guaranteed default operating speed.
Intel says XMP 3.0 is exclusive to DDR5 memory modules and DDR4 uses XMP 2.0. Intel’s support article, last reviewed April 9, 2026, states: “Yes, Intel XMP 3.0 technology is exclusive to DDR5 memory modules.” It adds: “For DDR4 memory modules, use Intel XMP 2.0 technology.” AMD’s compatibility list marks EXPO and XMP support for tested kits; check which profile your specific board and CPU support. If a system fails to boot or becomes unstable after a memory setting change, return to the board’s default memory settings and consult its manual before trying a different configuration.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Enables easier, more finely-tuned, and more stable overclocking through CORSAIR iCUE software than previous generation motherboard control
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
- Hand-Sorted, Tightly-Screened Memory Chips: Ensure consistent high-frequency performance with aggressive timing options
Which should you choose: DDR4 or DDR5?
- Keep DDR4 when retaining a compatible system. If your current board and CPU support DDR4 and the upgrade meets your capacity and workload needs, a compatible DDR4 kit avoids replacing the platform just to change memory generations.
- Choose the generation supported by a new platform. For a new build or platform replacement, confirm the CPU and exact motherboard’s memory generation first, then select a validated kit. Do not pay for a data rate solely because it is higher; check the board and CPU support and consider your applications.
- Prioritize capacity and compatibility over a generation-only comparison. A correctly supported kit and configuration are more useful than a faster-rated kit that the system cannot run as intended. Use the motherboard manual and QVL, plus the CPU maker’s compatibility information.
