A MotoGP Sprint is the shorter Saturday race, run over roughly half the Sunday Grand Prix distance. It awards points to the top nine finishers, with 12 points for the winner; Sunday’s Grand Prix awards points to the top 15, with 25 for the winner. Saturday qualifying sets the starting grid for both races, so the Sprint result does not determine Sunday’s grid.
How the Sprint and Grand Prix fit into a MotoGP weekend
MotoGP introduced Sprint races in 2023. The standard premier-class weekend runs through Friday practice, Saturday Free Practice 2 and qualifying, the Saturday afternoon Sprint, Sunday warm-up and the Sunday Grand Prix. The exact schedule can vary by event.

The Sprint is approximately 50% of the full race distance and typically lasts around 20 minutes, according to MotoGP’s Sprint explainer. It follows the same sporting rules as the Sunday race, but its shorter distance changes the balance of the contest. The original format announcement described the Sprint as approximately half the race distance.
How many points do the races award?
Both races count toward the championship, but the Sunday Grand Prix offers points to more finishers and a larger award for each position. The values below are the MotoGP points scales published in its points-system explainer and Sprint explainer.

A rider who wins both races can score as many as 37 points across the two races at a Grand Prix. The Sprint’s winner’s award is roughly half the Sunday winner’s haul, not exactly half: 12 compared with 25.
Does the Sprint decide Sunday’s starting grid?
No. Qualifying sets the grid for both the Sprint and Sunday Grand Prix. In the standard format, Friday afternoon Practice determines which ten riders go directly to Q2. The remaining riders contest Q1, and its two fastest advance to Q2. The results of Q1 and Q2 determine the starting positions for both races, as described in MotoGP’s qualifying explainer.

Because Saturday’s finishing order does not change Sunday’s grid, riders can pursue Sprint positions without needing to preserve a starting place for the next day. Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP’s Chief Sporting Officer, described the format at its announcement: “It will be 50% approximately of the race distance. The points awarded are 12 for the winner, nine for second place, and then so on.”

Sprint: make progress quickly
With fewer laps available, riders have less time to recover from a poor start or pass competitors. MotoGP’s Sprint explainer describes the shorter race as one where riders often need to be more aggressive and take opportunities quickly.

Grand Prix: manage the longer distance
Tyre management generally matters more over the longer Sunday race than in the Sprint. That is a broad tendency, not a fixed rule: circuit layout, weather, tyre choice and race circumstances can all shift the trade-offs. The same rider may need to balance immediate passing opportunities against preserving performance over a longer run.
