Start with the TV’s Game or low-latency mode, make sure the whole picture fits on screen, and preserve the game’s original proportions. Then reduce sharpening and other picture processing if they visibly distort the image. These are good settings to test—not universal rules—because menus and results vary by TV and signal path.
Start with Game Mode, then check responsiveness
Game Mode (sometimes called Game picture mode or a low-latency preset) is a sensible first choice when you want the TV to respond promptly to controller input. It typically reduces picture processing that can add delay. RTINGS’ settings guidance generally recommends Game Mode for lower input lag, but its testing also documents an exception: on the Samsung M5300, Game Mode produced higher input lag than Movie mode when motion interpolation, noise reduction, and other processing were disabled. For a TV you already own, compare modes with the same game and source rather than relying on the mode’s name. If a mode makes controls feel delayed, try another picture mode with motion and noise processing turned off where the menu allows it. The cited testing does not establish a single best mode for every television.
Fit the whole picture without changing its shape
Look for a picture-size setting that prevents overscan—the TV cropping the outer edges of the source image. Depending on the model, the option may be called “Fit to Screen,” “Just Scan,” or something similar. The aim is to display the complete image, including its edges; the exact label and behavior differ by TV. RTINGS discusses fit-to-screen controls in its TCL S517 and LG SK9500 settings guidance.

When the game outputs a 4:3 image to a widescreen TV, keep the original proportions if the TV and source provide that choice. Stretching the image to fill the display makes objects and characters appear wider than intended. A full-screen image is not necessarily a correctly shaped image.
Reduce sharpening and processing that alters the picture
Added sharpness can create bright or dark outlines around edges instead of revealing detail that was not in the source. Motion interpolation and noise reduction can also change the image, and processing may add input delay. If the picture looks artificially crisp, smeared, or otherwise processed, try lowering sharpness and disabling enhancement features, then judge the result while playing. The best setting depends on the TV and your preference; the TCL and LG recommendations are model-specific, not a universal sharpness value. Do not copy calibration numbers from another TV
Detailed white-balance and color-calibration values are not reliably transferable, even between individual units of the same TV model and screen size. Start with a suitable picture preset and change calibration controls only when you have a clear reason to correct what you see. RTINGS notes this unit-to-unit variation in its TCL S517 calibration guidance.

- Choose a low-latency picture mode. Select Game Mode or its equivalent and try the game. If control response seems worse, compare another mode with optional processing disabled.
- Set picture size. Choose Fit to Screen, Just Scan, or the equivalent to avoid cropping the source image.
- Preserve the source aspect ratio. Use the TV or source’s aspect-ratio control to avoid stretching a 4:3 game across a widescreen display.
- Check image enhancements. Reduce added sharpness and turn off motion or noise processing if they visibly degrade the picture or affect responsiveness.
- Adjust only what needs correcting. Avoid copying another unit’s white-balance or color values as a preset for your TV.
There is no established setting matrix here for specific console generations, analog connections, or scaler models. Those details can change what settings are available, so use the TV and source menus you actually have rather than assuming every retro setup offers the same controls.
