Start with your soundbar’s speech-focused mode—often called Voice Enhance, Voice, or Dialogue Mode. If speech still sits too low, raise the center-channel level a little if your model offers that control. For quiet late-night viewing, check for a night or dynamic-range compression setting. Names, availability, and effects vary by model, so make changes one at a time and compare them with familiar content.
First, confirm the soundbar is playing the audio
Check that the TV is sending sound to the soundbar, then test the dialogue problem with the program or scene where you notice it. This helps you avoid adjusting soundbar settings when the bar is not the active output or the issue is limited to particular content.
Turn on the speech-focused mode
Look in the soundbar’s sound or audio settings for a feature that emphasizes speech. The name and controls depend on the model:
- Samsung: Voice Enhance is documented for supported 2022-and-later soundbar models. Samsung provides remote-control and SmartThings app routes, but availability and menus can vary by model and software. See Samsung’s Voice Enhance instructions.
- Sony HT-A5000/A5000M: The guide calls the feature VOICE and lists Off and enabled choices. See the Sony HT-A5000/A5000M guide.
- Bose Smart Soundbar 300: Bose documents Dialogue Mode, controlled in the Bose app. See Bose’s Dialogue Mode instructions.
Play a familiar scene at your usual viewing volume after enabling the mode. Listen to both dialogue and non-speech audio: a speech-focused setting may change the overall balance, and the sources do not establish that similarly named modes work identically across brands.

Raise the center channel if speech is still too quiet
If your soundbar exposes a center-channel level, increase it in small steps and listen again. Samsung notes that the center channel typically handles most spoken content in movies and shows, and documents an adjustment range of -6 dB to +6 dB for the supported products covered on its page. That is a Samsung-specific range, not a standard for all soundbars. Details are in Samsung’s support instructions.
Not every soundbar has a separate center channel or lets you adjust its level. Avoid jumping straight to the maximum: check whether speech improves without making other content sound unbalanced.

For low-volume listening, check night or compression settings
If the main problem is hearing dialogue while keeping the overall volume low, look for a night, dynamic-range compression, or similar option in your model’s settings. The exact behavior is model-specific; do not assume every Night Mode handles dialogue the same way.
For example, Bose documents an Enhance dialogue compression option on the SoundTouch 130 and says it increases clarity of dialogue and sound effects at low volume settings. That description applies to that product, not necessarily to other Bose models or other soundbars. See Bose’s SoundTouch 130 documentation.

Make equalizer changes cautiously
Samsung lists TV volume and equalizer settings among the preliminary adjustments to check before trying Voice Enhance. Its guidance does not prescribe universal EQ frequencies or values. If you experiment with an equalizer, change one control at a time, listen to familiar dialogue and other audio, and note the original setting so you can reverse the change. The relevant guidance is in Samsung’s support article and its soundbar sound-setting guidance.

- Confirm the soundbar is the active audio output and choose a familiar scene with clear speech.
- Enable the available voice or dialogue enhancement mode, then listen at your normal volume.
- If speech remains too quiet and a center-level adjustment exists, raise it slightly and listen again.
- If you usually watch quietly, test the model’s night or compression control separately.
- If a change worsens other content, restore the previous value or the soundbar’s defaults. Consult the manual for your exact model if a setting is missing or behaves differently.
These settings are options to compare, not a universal ranking. Choose based on whether you want more prominent speech or a fuller balance, whether you watch at normal or low volume, and how the change sounds with both dialogue and non-dialogue material.
