If a Bluetooth accessory won’t pair, make sure Bluetooth is on, the accessory is charged and nearby, and it is in pairing mode—not merely switched on. If it pairs but keeps disconnecting, check its charge, range, and interference first; on Windows, power-saving settings and drivers can also be responsible.
Start with the checks that apply to any device
- Confirm Bluetooth is available and on. Check the Bluetooth setting on your computer, phone, tablet, or Apple TV. If the host has no built-in Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add it to a Windows computer; it is not an established fix for Bluetooth that is already built in but unreliable. See Microsoft’s Windows pairing guidance.
- Charge and power the accessory. Charge it or replace its batteries, then switch it on. A low battery can prevent pairing or a steady connection; Microsoft notes that some Bluetooth devices may not enter pairing mode or maintain a connection when their battery is low.
- Put the accessory into pairing mode. Being powered on does not necessarily make it discoverable. Follow the accessory maker’s instructions for your exact model; button combinations and reset procedures vary.
- Bring it close to the host. Keep the devices near each other while pairing. If the accessory has connected to another phone, computer, or tablet, disconnect or unpair it there if needed.
- Refresh the connection. Turn the accessory off and on, then toggle Bluetooth off and on at the host. Restarting the host may also help with a temporary glitch.
For general Windows troubleshooting, Microsoft also flags possible interference from unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports. If a Bluetooth device is sluggish, try moving those devices away from the computer. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
Choose the fix that matches what happens
The accessory does not appear in the Bluetooth list
It may not be in pairing mode, may be out of range, or may have too little charge. Check the model-specific pairing instructions, charge it, and try again near the host. If it is connected to another device, disconnect it there before searching again.
The accessory appears but will not connect
Remove its old pairing from the host, then put the accessory back into pairing mode and pair it again. The setting may be called Forget, Remove device, or Unpair, depending on the platform. On iPhone or iPad, Apple recommends unpairing an accessory from other devices if it pairs with them but not with the iPhone or iPad. Apple TV guidance also recommends unpairing and pairing again when an accessory is visible but will not connect.

iPhone or iPad
Keep the accessory nearby, charged, and in pairing mode. If the accessory requires an app, check whether that app has permission to use Bluetooth. Forget the accessory on the iPhone or iPad and pair it again; if it connects to other devices, unpair it from those devices and retry. Confirm compatibility with the accessory maker.
