Start with safety, not photos
Wait until local authorities say it is safe to return. Downed power lines, broken gas lines, broken glass, and unstable areas can make a damaged property dangerous. Follow official local instructions before entering, and do not risk injury to capture evidence. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) gives this safety guidance in its Post-Disaster Claims Guide.
Document the damage before cleanup, when safe
The NAIC’s advice in “Navigating the Claims Process: Recover and Rebuild” is direct: “Document all losses.” Take photos or video of affected rooms, exterior damage, damaged belongings, and the overall areas affected. Add written notes and make a list of damage and lost items. Preserve damaged property for the insurer’s inspection if practical and safe.
There is no universal photo format, metadata standard, or required claim app established in the NAIC guidance. Ask your insurer what evidence it needs for your claim rather than assuming a particular format is mandatory.

Notify the insurer and confirm the applicable requirements
Contact your insurance agent or company as soon as practical. Reporting deadlines and documentation requirements can vary by state and policy, so ask what applies to your specific loss. The NAIC’s “What You Need to Know When Filing a Homeowners Claim” recommends having your policy information, current contact details, a description of what happened, and an initial list of property damage ready.
Reporting damage does not by itself establish that a loss is covered. Coverage, deductibles, and claim deadlines depend on the policy and applicable jurisdiction; the NAIC’s general consumer guidance cannot resolve those questions for an individual claim. Contact your insurer for policy-specific answers and, if needed, your state insurance department.

Separate emergency protection from permanent repairs
Once you have documented the damage, take reasonable steps to limit further loss when it is safe. For example, the NAIC guide mentions using a tarp or boards to cover a roof opening. Keep receipts for emergency work and materials. Speak with your agent or insurer before beginning permanent repairs: work the insurer did not authorize may not be paid.
A temporary measure is not a reason to climb onto an unstable or damaged roof. Choose only work that can be done safely, and ask the insurer how to handle urgent repairs if the damage needs professional attention.

Build a room-by-room contents inventory
List damaged or destroyed belongings by room. Include identifying details where available and use existing photos, video, or receipts to help document items. If a home inventory was lost in the storm, reconstruct the list from memory and review older personal photos for belongings visible in the background. Ask the adjuster how much time you have to submit the inventory.
Keep a dated claim and expense record
Save copies of correspondence, receipts, and expense records. For every conversation with the insurer, note the date, the contact’s name and title, and what was discussed. If a proposed settlement is unclear, ask for an itemized explanation. The NAIC outlines these record-keeping steps in “Get Smart About your Insurance Coverage.”

Choose repair contractors carefully
Disaster-area urgency can make it tempting to sign quickly, but do not let pressure rush a contract or an upfront payment. Check references and seek more than one bid, as the NAIC advises in “Navigating the Claims Process: Recover and Rebuild.”
