Start by connecting Nothing Headphone (1) to the Nothing X app and checking for a firmware update. Then check the fit and seal, try the Balanced EQ preset, and adjust noise control for your surroundings. Leave Personal Sound, custom EQ and Spatial Audio for later: they are options to compare, not settings everyone needs to change.
1. Connect to Nothing X and check for an update
Nothing identifies Nothing X as the app for Headphone (1) settings and customization. Pair the headphones with the app and check whether it offers a firmware update. The available official information confirms app-based firmware updating, but does not establish that a particular Headphone (1) update is required or identify a current release.
2. Check fit before changing the sound
Wear the headphones comfortably and make sure the earcups seal around your ears. Nothing Support advises checking this before using EQ, noting that a poor fit can significantly affect sound quality. If the seal is uneven, adjusting bass or treble may not address the underlying issue.
3. Use Balanced as an EQ starting point
Nothing lists four named presets: Balanced, More Bass, More Treble and Voice. Balanced is a convenient baseline for comparison, not a proven best setting for every listener. Start with familiar music or spoken audio and switch presets to find the emphasis you prefer.

Nothing describes an eight-band equalizer in Nothing X and also offers in-app QR profiles created by other users. If you move to Custom or Advanced, make small changes and compare them with the preset you liked best; no cited source establishes a universally preferred EQ curve.
4. Try Personal Sound only if you want another comparison
Nothing says a quick hearing analysis in Nothing X can create a Personal Sound profile tailored to how you hear. Compare it with your preferred standard EQ and keep whichever sounds better to you. The manufacturer describes an in-app analysis; the cited product information does not characterize it as a clinical hearing test or provide clinical validation.

5. Choose ANC or Transparency for your surroundings
Active Noise Cancellation is intended to reduce surrounding noise; Transparency Mode lets environmental sound through. Choose based on whether you want more isolation or more awareness of what is around you. Nothing documents a long press on the Roller as the physical shortcut for switching noise modes.
The product page describes adaptive ANC as checking surroundings every 600 ms. That is a manufacturer-stated product figure, not an independent measurement.

6. Treat Spatial Audio as optional
Nothing describes Spatial Audio as spatialization with head tracking on its international product page. Support documents an Off–Static–Dynamic mode cycle. Compare the available modes with ordinary stereo on music, video or other content you actually use. Processing is a preference, and the cited material does not establish that it improves every recording or suits every listener.

- Press the Roller to play or pause.
- Press and hold the Roller to switch noise-control modes.
- Click the Paddle to move between tracks; press and hold it for scrubbing.
Track and scrubbing behavior can vary with the player and platform. Button functions and optional cycles may also depend on the phone, platform and app configuration.
