A hurricane emergency kit should cover water and food, alerts and backup power, lighting, first aid and medicines, sanitation, important documents, and the specific needs of everyone in your household—including infants, pets, and people who rely on medical equipment. FEMA recommends at least three days of water and non-perishable food in its hurricane checklist, and a separate FEMA basic-kit checklist gives a planning amount of one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days.
Start with water and food
FEMA’s hurricane preparedness checklist recommends at least a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food. A separate FEMA basic emergency supply checklist specifies one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation. Treat that amount as a baseline and adjust for household size, pets, individual needs, and local emergency-management guidance.
- Store non-perishable foods your household can eat and prepare safely.
- Pack a manual can opener if you include canned food.
- Include extra water and appropriate food for pets.
Plan for alerts, light, and charging
Power and mobile service can be disrupted during a storm. FEMA’s hurricane checklist calls for an AM/FM or NOAA Weather Radio; its basic-kit checklist specifies a battery-powered or hand-crank radio that can receive NOAA Weather Radio tone alerts. Keep extra batteries with the radio and flashlight, and include a cell phone and extra batteries or chargers for essential equipment.
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio capable of receiving NOAA Weather Radio alerts
- Extra radio batteries
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Cell phone and chargers or backup batteries
Pack first aid, medicines, and personal medical supplies
The hurricane checklist recommends medications for at least one week and copies of prescriptions. It also lists a first aid kit, extra eyeglasses or contact lenses, and medical equipment or assistive technology with backup batteries. Build this part of the kit around the actual needs of household members; a general first aid kit does not replace individual medical planning.

Keep a home kit and a portable go bag
A home kit can hold larger or grouped supplies for sheltering in place. FEMA’s broader emergency-kit guidance recommends keeping a full kit at home and smaller portable kits in workplaces, vehicles, or other places household members spend time. A go bag should be accessible and portable enough to take when evacuation is necessary; it is not a reason to delay or ignore an evacuation order.
Use this checklist to assemble supplies, then tailor quantities and contents to your household and follow local emergency-management directions. FEMA’s hurricane checklist says, “The right time to prepare for a hurricane is now.”
