Check compatibility before setup
Sonos home theater compatibility depends on the Sub generation and the speaker it will join. Sonos lists Sub (Gen 1), Sub (Gen 2), and Sub (Gen 3) as compatible with all its home theater speakers. Sub 4 is compatible with all Sonos home theater speakers except Playbar and Playbase. If you have either of those speakers, check the Sub generation before proceeding. App compatibility is separate from speaker compatibility: Sub 4 and Sub (Gen 3) do not work with the Sonos S1 Controller app. Sonos lists Sub (Gen 1) and Sub (Gen 2) as compatible with both S1 Controller and the current Sonos app. You can check your Sub generation in the System section of your Sonos account. These are home theater compatibility notes; other Sonos product categories may have additional exceptions. Sonos app version compatibility
Add a Sub to an existing home theater room
- Place the Sub where you intend to use it and connect it to power. Leave at least one side of its slot unobstructed. If it is horizontal, do not place anything on top; if it is vertical against a wall, keep the front opening clear.
- Open the Sonos app on your iOS or Android device.
- Go to Settings and select the room containing the home theater speaker you want to pair with the Sub.
- Choose Add/Connect Sub, then follow the on-screen prompts.
The Sub connects wirelessly to its primary Sonos product. Sonos says the Sub and that product should be in the same room. If you are adding a new Sonos product to an existing system, the general app path is Settings → Add Speaker or Component; follow the app’s instructions. Add a product to an existing Sonos system

Set up a new home theater speaker and Sub
If both devices are new, set up the home theater speaker first. The Sonos app can then guide you through adding the Sub during the speaker setup flow.
Add a second Sub
Some Sonos home theater speakers support two Subs, but support depends on both the host speaker and the Sub generations. Sonos’s compatibility table lists these combinations: check the complete compatibility table.
Rank #2
- Unlock your entertainment when you pair Sub Mini with Beam or Ray and experience dramatic depth that puts you inside your shows, movies, and games.
- Within the acoustically sealed cabinet, dual custom woofers generate the full-toned low frequencies of a much larger subwoofer. Advanced processing further enhances the bass response.
- Both woofers face inward to create a force-canceling effect that neutralizes distortion.
- Trueplay tuning technology adapts the bass for your room's acoustics so it won't sound harsh, muddy, or flat—even if you place Sub Mini next to the wall. Supported iOS device required.
| Home theater speaker | Two-Sub combinations listed by Sonos |
|---|---|
| Arc Ultra and Beam Ultra | Two Sub 4s, two Sub (Gen 3)s, or one of each |
| Arc, Beam (Gen 1 and Gen 2), Ray, and Amp | Combinations involving Sub 4 and Sub (Gen 3), with additional Sub (Gen 3) generation options. Check Sonos’s table for the exact combination for your host speaker. |
| Playbar and Playbase | Sub (Gen 1), Sub (Gen 2), and Sub (Gen 3) combinations are listed; at least one Sub (Gen 3) is required. |
To add another Sub, open Settings, select the existing home theater room, and choose Add/Connect Second Sub. Follow the prompts and confirm that your exact speaker-and-Sub combination appears in Sonos’s compatibility table.
Adjust Sub audio after setup
In the Sonos app, open Settings, select the room, then go to Sound → Sub Audio. From there you can toggle Sub audio, adjust Sub Level, and set Phase Control to 0° or 180°. Sonos suggests trying phase adjustment if bass is insufficient at your usual listening position. When Trueplay is used with a Sub, Phase Control is set as part of tuning and cannot be changed while Trueplay tuning is enabled. Sonos Sub setup and audio controls
