If your home theater uses a Sonos soundbar, the practical Sonos Sub alternatives are usually other Sonos subs—not a generic wireless subwoofer. Sonos documents third-party powered-sub connections for Amp and Connect:Amp, with important limits. For soundbar systems, compare the compatible Sonos Sub Mini and Sub 4 against your exact soundbar model, room and available space.
Choose based on the Sonos product you already own
Start with the exact model and generation in your room. Sonos pairing compatibility is specific: a subwoofer that works with one Sonos component is not automatically an option for another. The current product documentation identifies Sub Mini for Beam and Ray home-theater use, and Sub 4 for Arc Ultra, Arc or Beam. Check Sonos’s current compatibility list for your precise setup before buying.
| Option | Documented fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Sonos Sub Mini | Home theater with Beam or Ray; verify the exact current compatibility list | Compact footprint and app-guided Sonos setup; positioned by Sonos for smaller spaces |
| Sonos Sub 4 | Arc Ultra, Arc or Beam, according to Sonos’s fact sheet | Larger enclosure; confirm compatibility, placement and whether its size suits the room |
| Third-party powered subwoofer | Amp or Connect:Amp through the RCA subwoofer output, subject to the limits below | Must be powered and have an appropriate RCA connection; not a direct pairing for an ordinary Sonos soundbar |
These distinctions come from Sonos product and support documentation, not independent listening comparisons. The available evidence does not establish that one option sounds better than another.
Sonos Sub Mini: a compact native option
Sub Mini is the smaller Sonos-native choice to investigate for a compatible Beam or Ray setup. Sonos also lists Era 100, One and One SL on its product page, but those names do not establish compatibility with every home-theater configuration; check the support list for your system.
#1 Best Overall
- 10" front-firing spun-copper IMG woofer
- All-digital amplifier with 300 watts peak power
- Volume low pass crossover and phase control
- Line level LFE RCA inputs for maximum receiver compatibility
- Dimensions 14 5" x 12 5" x 16 4"
Sonos lists dual 6-inch woofers in a sealed cabinet and a frequency response down to 25 Hz. Its stated dimensions are 12.01 inches high by 9.06 inches wide and 9.06 inches deep. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or a promise of how much bass you will hear in a particular room. Room acoustics and placement matter.
The Sonos US product page displayed a price of $399 USD on October 7, 2026, alongside a crossed-out $499 price and a displayed $100 saving. That is volatile page pricing, not a guaranteed current or recurring price; check the live price and availability for your region.

- 12" high excursion spun-copper Imp woofer
- 29 hertz – 120 hertz plus /- 3 dB
- 400 watt
- Max acoustic output 116dB
- Bass-reflex via rear firing port. Amplifier power (control/peak): 200 watts/400 watts
Sonos Sub 4: a larger native option
Sonos’s Sub 4 fact sheet names Arc Ultra, Arc and Beam as compatible soundbars. Check the latest support information for your exact model and generation, particularly if you plan to combine subs: Sonos says two subs can be paired in compatible setups and that Sub 4 works with previous Sub generations in select setups, not every configuration.
The fact sheet specifies dual 5-by-8-inch elliptical woofers, a ported cabinet and frequency response as low as 25 Hz. Those specifications describe the product on paper; they do not establish comparative performance against Sub Mini in your room. Choose based on confirmed compatibility, room needs, enclosure size and placement rather than the frequency figure alone.

When a third-party subwoofer can work
Sonos documents an RCA connection for an active (powered) third-party subwoofer on Sonos Amp and Connect:Amp. This is a separate connection path from pairing a sub with a Sonos soundbar; Sonos does not document a generic wireless subwoofer pairing for an ordinary Sonos soundbar.
- Powered versus passive: The subwoofer must be active (powered). Sonos says passive third-party subwoofers are not supported by Amp or Connect:Amp.
- TV surround limitation: The RCA subwoofer output is disabled when either Amp or Connect:Amp is being used to power TV surround speakers. If that is your setup, this route will not provide subwoofer output.
- Crossover: Amp offers an adjustable 50–110 Hz crossover. Connect:Amp has a fixed 80 Hz crossover. Those are Sonos-stated settings, not a recommendation for a particular room.
Before choosing this route, confirm that you have the right Amp model and use, and that the subwoofer is powered and supports the connection. Do not buy a passive sub or assume this RCA option applies to a Sonos soundbar.

App setup and room tuning
Sonos describes Sub Mini as an app-guided Wi-Fi product and says Trueplay can tune for room acoustics. Its product listing says Trueplay requires a supported iOS device. The Sub 4 fact sheet lists Trueplay compatibility with iOS and Android. Feature requirements may change, so check current Sonos guidance if tuning support affects your decision.
Placement and specifications
Measure the space where the sub will go and consider how its location fits the room; a listed low-frequency response does not by itself guarantee a particular listening result. For Sub Mini, the published dimensions are 12.01 × 9.06 × 9.06 inches (height × width × depth). The cited Sonos materials do not establish an equivalent set of Sub 4 dimensions here, so check its current product specifications before planning placement.

A practical purchase checklist
- Identify the exact Sonos soundbar or Amp/Connect:Amp model and generation in your system.
- Match it to Sonos’s current compatibility documentation; do not infer compatibility from another model in the same product family.
- If you have a soundbar, compare the compatible Sonos-native option by footprint, placement and current regional price.
- If considering a third-party sub, verify that you have Amp or Connect:Amp in a supported configuration, and that the sub is powered with the required RCA connection.
- For an Amp or Connect:Amp powering TV surround speakers, account for the disabled subwoofer output before purchasing.
- Check current Sonos prices, stock, setup requirements and feature support before ordering; product details and availability can change.
