League of Legends tournaments do not all use the same format. In the 2026 World Championship, teams pass through a double-elimination Play-In, a Swiss stage where three wins earn advancement, and an eight-team single-elimination Knockout stage. Other events use round robins or different playoff structures, so the rules depend on the tournament and season.
How does the 2026 LoL Worlds format work?
Riot Games’ 2026 League Handbook sets out three stages: Play-In, Swiss, and Knockout. The route moves from a small qualifying bracket to record-based qualification, then to a bracket where one loss ends a team’s run.
Play-In: double elimination for one Swiss place
Four lowest-seeded teams from regions with multiple Worlds seeds that did not win MSI compete in a best-of-five double-elimination bracket. One team qualifies for Swiss. After a match loss, a team still has another bracket route; it is not eliminated immediately.
Swiss: three wins to advance
Sixteen teams play five rounds. A team that reaches three wins by the end of the stage advances, and eight teams qualify for Knockout. This is not a permanent set of groups in which every team plays every other team: Swiss is a multi-round format, and the handbook’s stated rule is the three-win qualification threshold.

Knockout: one loss ends the run
The eight qualifiers play a single-elimination bracket. Lose a match in this stage and the team is out of the tournament.
Are League tournaments played in groups?
Sometimes, but “groups” is not a universal League tournament format. A round robin gives teams in a pool a match against every other team once. It creates a standings table that can determine who advances, but it is different from Swiss, where advancement is based on a record threshold across successive rounds.

For example, Riot’s First Stand 2025 announcement describes a single best-of-three round robin: the top four teams advanced, while fifth place was eliminated. The four remaining teams then played a best-of-five single-elimination bracket. That is one event’s format, not a rule for all League tournaments.

| Format | What a loss means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | One match loss eliminates the team from that bracket. | 2026 Worlds Knockout: eight teams compete in a single-elimination bracket. |
| Double elimination | A team can continue after a loss through another bracket route; a further loss eliminates it. | 2026 Worlds Play-In: four teams compete in a best-of-five double-elimination bracket. |
These labels describe how the bracket handles losses. They do not tell you whether a match is a best-of-one, best-of-three, or best-of-five; check the event rules for both the elimination structure and series length.

How do best-of-one, best-of-three, and best-of-five matches work?
Bo1, Bo3, and Bo5 refer to the number of games that may be played in a match series. The first team to win the required majority wins the series: one game in a Bo1, two in a Bo3, or three in a Bo5. A bracket format and a series length answer different questions: the bracket says what a match loss does to a team, while the Bo label says how many games decide that match.
Why can formats differ by region and season?
Riot’s 2026 regional handbooks illustrate that league formats vary. One Split 3 example uses a best-of-three Swiss regular season, with teams advancing at three wins or being eliminated at three losses, followed by double-elimination playoffs. Another uses a single best-of-three round robin followed by a modified double-elimination playoff. These are specific regional examples, not a common format shared by every league.

For any event, check its rules for the stage structure, series lengths, advancement thresholds, and what a loss means. Do not assume that a tournament uses Worlds’ format just because it is a League of Legends event.

Is Fearless Draft an elimination format?
No. Fearless Draft changes champion availability within a best-of-series, not how teams advance or are eliminated from the tournament. Riot’s 2025 announcement says champions selected in earlier games of a series become unavailable to both teams in later games of that series. The bracket or stage rules still determine what a match result means for the team’s tournament run.
