Choose a Wi-Fi router with a published, model-specific security-support policy, a reliable way to receive firmware updates, and WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Before buying, also check the exact model’s privacy notice, whether setup requires an account, and which features rely on optional cloud services. These checks help you judge a router’s security practices; they do not establish that any particular model has been independently tested.
Start with the router’s support lifetime
Look up the exact model number and hardware revision on the manufacturer’s website. Do not assume that similar names, different revisions, or the same brand share a support term. Find the security-support period and the manufacturer’s end-of-life policy, then check whether the model is still receiving security fixes.
When a router reaches end of life, known vulnerabilities may remain unpatched. CISA advises monitoring vendor end-of-life announcements and replacing devices that no longer receive security support. Its guidance addresses communications infrastructure broadly, so use it as a supporting principle rather than a consumer-router product comparison: CISA’s guidance on hardening communications infrastructure.
ASD’s Australian Cyber Security Centre says a gap of more than 12 months since a firmware update makes end of life likely. Treat that as a warning sign, not proof: update schedules vary, and the manufacturer’s current support information is the authority for a specific router. Check the ACSC guidance on securing Wi-Fi and routers.

Check how firmware updates reach the router
A security patch only helps if it reaches the device. Prefer routers that support automatic firmware updates, and look for a clear official update channel, visible update status, and notifications or release notes that let you understand what has changed. Automatic updates reduce the burden of remembering to check, but they do not replace verifying that the model remains supported.
ASD’s ACSC recommends favoring replacement routers that support automatic updates and prioritizing replacement of end-of-life routers. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for whether updates are automatic by default, whether they can be scheduled or paused, and how to confirm the installed firmware version. Download firmware only through official manufacturer channels.

Confirm the Wi-Fi encryption options
Look for WPA3 Personal, or at minimum WPA2 Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes WPA3 as the newer and best available encryption option and says WPA2 also encrypts the network. Disable legacy WEP or WPA modes if the router offers them; older devices that cannot connect may need an upgrade rather than a weaker network setting. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.
Check the router’s documentation for the exact security modes it supports. A product listing that says only “secure Wi-Fi” does not tell you whether it supports WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.

Review privacy, account setup, and cloud dependence
Read the privacy notice for the exact router and companion app, not just the brand’s general marketing material. Check what information is collected, whether it is shared, which telemetry controls are available, and whether an account is required to set up or administer the router.
Find out what continues to work if optional cloud services are disabled. Some features may depend on a vendor account or remote service; the product documentation and privacy terms should explain the implications. Do not infer a model’s privacy practices from its brand or a security label. NIST’s September 2024 consumer-router cybersecurity profile treats privacy as one of the areas to consider for this product category; it does not certify individual current models.

Check the router’s administrative controls
Once installed, change the default administrator password, set a strong Wi-Fi password, and change the network name. Review convenience features that may increase exposure, including remote management, WPS, and UPnP. The FTC recommends considering disabling them; decide based on whether your household needs each feature and what the router’s documentation says.
- Administrator password: Use a unique password rather than the factory default.
- Wi-Fi password: Choose a strong password that is not reused elsewhere.
- Remote management: Consider turning it off if you do not need to administer the router from outside your home network.
- WPS and UPnP: Consider disabling either feature if your devices and applications do not require it.
- Guest network: Check whether the router can provide a separate guest network for visitors.
Make sure it fits your network and household
Security is only useful if the router works with your internet service and connected devices. Verify compatibility with your ISP, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and the devices you plan to connect. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for coverage suited to your home. A router that requires weaker settings to support an older device may call for replacing that device instead.

Know when replacement is the safer choice
If a router no longer receives security updates, replace it with a supported model rather than relying on settings to compensate for missing patches. The FBI advises replacing end-of-life routers with updated models if possible: FBI guidance on cybercriminal proxy services exploiting end-of-life routers.
The FTC also says to consider replacing a router if it cannot offer WPA2 or WPA3 after a software update. If you are uncertain about support status, check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model and hardware revision before deciding.
