Check your exact desktop or motherboard manual before buying; available ports, headers, and expansion slots vary by model.
Choose the option that fits your setup

These options are not interchangeable: choose based on port location, device requirements, free motherboard resources, power connections, case clearance, and OS support.
Check the desktop before buying
- Identify the exact system or motherboard model. Use its manual to find the rear USB ports, internal USB headers, and expansion slots. ASUS notes that desktop hardware can differ by model and region and directs owners to their specific manual: ASUS desktop support.
- Decide where the new connection should be. A hub sits outside the case; a PCIe card typically exposes ports at the rear; a motherboard header can serve case-front ports or internal devices when the connector types match.
- Match the port to the device. Compare USB connector type and speed, and check whether a card needs a particular slot width, auxiliary power cable, or OS support. Do not assume all USB expansion cards share the same specifications.
- Confirm the physical fit. Check the slot and bracket clearance inside the case, plus any power connector the card requires. A free-looking slot is not sufficient if the card’s physical or electrical requirements do not match.
Use an external hub for easy access
A hub is generally the simplest choice when you need more connections on a desk or within reach. Connect it to a computer USB port, then attach devices to the hub. Select a hub whose connector types and stated speeds suit the devices you intend to use, and review its power specifications rather than assuming it can support every device or combination.
The evidence available here does not establish a particular hub model or universal power limit. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the hub you are considering.

Add ports with a PCIe USB card
A PCIe card is an option when you want additional ports mounted at the rear of the desktop and have a compatible available slot. Some cards also provide an internal USB header, but port mix, speed, slot requirements, supplemental power, and OS support vary by model.
Example: StarTech PEXUSB312A1C1H
StarTech documents this specific card with one USB-C port, two USB-A ports, and an internal 20-pin header that can provide two internal USB-A ports. The manufacturer lists up to 10 Gbps for its external USB-A and USB-C ports, a PCIe 3.0 x4 connection, and a SATA power connector. It also states that this model does not support DisplayPort Alt Mode or USB Power Delivery. These details apply to this card only; consult the StarTech product documentation before purchase.

Example: ASSMANN DS-30220-5
The ASSMANN manual describes a different card: a two-port PCIe USB 3.0 model that requires an available PCIe slot. Do not transfer the StarTech card’s port mix, speeds, power connector, or other specifications to this model. See the ASSMANN DS-30220-5 manual for its own requirements.
Install according to the exact card manual
- Shut down the computer and unplug it from power.
- Open the case and locate a compatible, available PCIe slot and the matching expansion bracket.
- Fit the card into the slot and secure it to the case. Connect any required auxiliary power cable as directed by that card’s manual.
- Close the case, reconnect power, and start the computer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any required drivers or OS-specific setup.
The ASSMANN installation sequence specifies shutdown, unplugging, opening the case, fitting the card in an available PCIe slot, securing it, then closing the case and reconnecting power. Follow the instructions supplied with your own card; the sequence and any power or software steps can differ. ASUS describes the expansion slot bracket as the area removed to install an expansion card in its desktop support guidance.

Use a motherboard header for case-front USB
If the case already has front USB ports that are not connected, a matching cable from the case can connect them to an available motherboard USB header. This does not mean any USB cable fits any header: header type and pin definition vary by board. Supermicro’s X14SAE/X14SAE-F manual and C9Z890-MW/C9B860-MW/C9Q870-M motherboard manual illustrate different header configurations and front-access wiring. Check your own motherboard manual for the header name, pinout, and available connector before attaching a cable.

- Inspect the port and cable for visible damage or a loose connection.
- Connect the device directly to a working USB port on the computer. MSI recommends this test to help determine whether the device itself is working.
- Check whether the device requires its own software or driver, and install or repair it as directed by the device maker.
- If the direct test works but the added port does not, consult the hub or expansion-card maker’s troubleshooting steps and check that the hardware and any required power connection are installed correctly.
- For a Windows USB-driver issue, MSI lists Windows Update, reinstalling the USB Root Hub driver, updating chipset drivers, and updating BIOS among possible troubleshooting measures. These are diagnostic options, not prerequisites for adding ports; use the instructions for your exact PC and motherboard: MSI USB device troubleshooting.
