A data center usually does not shut off the instant utility power fails. A UPS is designed to maintain continuity while backup generation comes online; generators can then supply power through a longer interruption. Whether equipment and online services keep working depends on the facility’s power design, the condition of its backup systems, and whether applications can fail over to another site.

What happens after utility power is lost?

The simplified sequence is utility power loss, UPS continuity, transfer to backup generation, then either continued operation on generator power or a return to utility power. The UPS and generator have different jobs: the UPS bridges a disruption, while generators provide backup power for a longer interruption. The transfer equipment connecting the power sources is another critical part of the chain.

This is a conceptual sequence, not a universal switching procedure. Facilities differ in design, and the available evidence does not establish a standard UPS runtime, generator start time, or period a particular facility can operate on backup power.

What if the backup systems fail?

Backup power reduces the chance that a utility interruption will immediately take down critical equipment, but it is not a guarantee. UPS units, transfer switches, generators, and the processes used to operate and maintain them can all be involved in a power-related outage.

In Uptime Institute’s 2025 Global Data Center Survey, power was the primary cause of 45% of respondents’ most recent impactful incidents or outages (n=96). Among reported IT-service outages stemming from power issues, respondents identified UPS failure (42%), transfer-switch failure (36%), and generator failure (28%). These are survey-reported cause shares, not probabilities that a specific facility’s equipment will fail, and the categories should not be added as if they were mutually exclusive. Uptime Institute’s 2025 survey also cautions that outage tracking has uncertainty and reporting limitations.

If the facility’s power chain cannot keep the IT load running, servers or other equipment may stop operating and services hosted there may be interrupted. A power failure does not by itself establish that data will be lost: that depends on the system and its data-protection arrangements.

Can a service stay online if one data center loses power?

Possibly. A company can design an application to use more than one data center, distribute data across systems, or shift access to another site during a disruption. Google says its data centers automatically shift access to another data center during a disruption and distribute data across multiple systems; it also says, “And our emergency backup generators continue to work even during power failures.” That is Google’s description of its own operations, not a promise about every provider or service. Uptime Institute describes multi-site availability zones and platform-level failover as resilience strategies. These can help preserve user-visible availability when one site has a problem, but failover must be designed and operate successfully. A facility can lose power while an application remains reachable elsewhere; without effective failover, users may see an interruption.

How common are outages, and what do the figures mean?

Uptime Institute’s 2025 survey found that 50% of respondents said their organization had experienced an impactful outage in the previous three years (n=754). One in ten respondents classified their most recent impactful outage as serious or severe. Among respondents who experienced a significant outage and reported its cost (n=94), one in five said it exceeded $1 million. These results describe the survey sample; they are not universal rates or a prediction of the cost or severity of a future incident.

Uptime Institute’s July 2026 survey overview says fewer respondents experienced an impactful outage in the previous three years, while one in ten outages remained serious or severe and outage costs continued to rise. The public overview does not provide detailed supporting tables, so it is best treated as high-level context rather than a directly comparable set of detailed figures. What makes a data center’s backup design more resilient?

Resilience depends on more than the presence of a generator. Uptime Institute’s 2025 survey reports two common levels of redundant power equipment in respondents’ primary data centers: 2N and N+1.

Reported redundancy level Share of respondents What the figure describes
2N 42% Respondents’ most common redundant power-equipment level for their primary data center (n=679).
N+1 41% Respondents’ most common redundant power-equipment level for their primary data center (n=679).

These are survey responses, not rankings of which design is better. A redundancy label alone cannot show how a facility performs during an incident: the full power chain, maintenance, testing, staff training, and change management matter too. Uptime’s survey notes that respondents commonly considered outages preventable through better management, processes, or configuration.

When assessing a facility or service, the useful questions are whether its power equipment has tested redundancy, how UPS, transfer equipment, and generators depend on one another, what backup duration is specified for that facility, how operating procedures are tested, and whether applications and data can fail over to another site. The figures above do not establish a universal runtime, cost ranking, or guarantee of continuous service.
