Enable Remote Play on the PS5, then enable two rest-mode options if you want PlayStation Portal to wake the console. For a steadier connection, PlayStation recommends wiring the PS5 to the router and connecting the Portal over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These settings make the devices reachable; they cannot guarantee smooth play on a weak or congested network.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play for the user who will play.
- Make sure the PS5 is connected to the internet, signed into the same account used on the Portal, and running the latest system software.

Allow the Portal to wake a PS5 in rest mode
If you want to start Remote Play while the console is resting, enable both options below:
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Turn on Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Without these options, turn on the PS5 before starting Remote Play. The rest-mode settings are for reachability and wake-up; they do not improve the Wi-Fi signal or internet connection.

Set up the network in the recommended order
PlayStation’s network advice prioritizes a wired PS5 connection and a stable wireless connection for the Portal. A high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps is recommended for a better play experience; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted play. See PlayStation’s Portal network setup guidance.
- Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet, if possible. PlayStation recommends a wired console connection.
- Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. This is PlayStation’s recommendation for the handheld.
- If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, put it and the Portal on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check band steering. Some routers automatically move devices between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. PlayStation suggests disabling band steering if possible when connecting the Portal, so the router does not switch it between bands.
- Test near the router. If play remains unstable, bring wireless devices closer and reduce physical obstructions.
Ethernet versus Wi-Fi is a practical choice, not a universal guarantee: actual results also depend on router placement, signal strength, congestion, and the internet connection.

If Portal will not connect or play is unstable
Portal cannot connect to the PS5
- Confirm Enable Remote Play is on for the intended PS5 user.
- Check that the PS5 is online and that both devices use the same account.
- If the PS5 is in rest mode, confirm both network and wake options are enabled. Otherwise, turn on the console first.

It connects, but the stream is unstable
- Try Ethernet for the PS5; if that is not possible, verify the PS5 and Portal are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Keep the Portal on 5 GHz Wi-Fi and consider disabling router band steering if it is moving the Portal between bands.
- Move wireless devices closer to the router and reduce obstructions. Public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control.
Choose a lower maximum video quality if needed
The Portal’s quick menu includes a maximum video-quality choice: 1080p High Quality or 1080p Standard. PlayStation says video quality adjusts automatically to the internet connection; these choices cap that automatic adjustment. Trying Standard may be worthwhile when stability matters more than peak image quality, but PlayStation does not promise that lowering the cap will fix a weak connection. Public Wi-Fi has extra limits
On public Wi-Fi, connection quality may be outside your control. PlayStation also notes that regional regulations can prevent Portal connections to certain public networks, including some 5 GHz networks.
