HarmonyOS is Huawei’s operating-system platform and connected-device ecosystem. It is not one unchanging software release: Huawei has introduced HarmonyOS NEXT, released HarmonyOS 6 SDK materials, and announced a HarmonyOS 7 developer beta. Availability also depends on location; Huawei says HarmonyOS 7 upgrades are currently limited to mainland China. To decide how it differs from Android and iOS, check the specific device, software version, region, apps, and services you need.
What is HarmonyOS?
HarmonyOS is Huawei’s operating-system platform for phones and other connected devices. Huawei says HarmonyOS 7 is based on the open-source OpenHarmony project. The platform is also presented by Huawei as an ecosystem intended to support interaction across devices, rather than only as phone software. That is Huawei’s design positioning, not an independently verified comparison showing it works better than Android or iOS.
The name covers different releases and stages, so a statement about one HarmonyOS version should not automatically be applied to every device carrying the brand.
Which HarmonyOS version is available?
| Release reference | What Huawei reported | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| HarmonyOS NEXT | Huawei announced the release and a public beta expansion on October 23, 2024. Its announcement reported more than 15,000 native apps and meta-services at that time. | This is a dated historical figure and a different measure from Huawei’s later combined “apps and services” figure. |
| HarmonyOS 6.0.0 | Huawei’s developer release page lists the 6.0.0 Release SDK, based on the OpenHarmony SDK, with release data of September 25, 2025. | A developer SDK release date does not by itself establish that every consumer device received that software. |
| HarmonyOS 7 | Huawei announced the developer beta on June 12, 2026. Its consumer support FAQ, consulted October 7, 2026, says upgrades are currently limited to mainland China and that public availability remains in beta/public-beta stages. | Check Huawei’s current update channel for the exact model and location; rollout guidance can change. |

How is HarmonyOS different from Android and iOS?
The practical difference is that HarmonyOS belongs to Huawei’s own device and services ecosystem. Android is the competing mobile platform, while iOS is Apple’s mobile platform. For a prospective user, the useful comparison is not an unsupported ranking of speed, privacy, or security; it is whether a platform supports the device, apps, services, and cross-device routines that matter to them.
| What to compare | HarmonyOS | Android and iOS |
|---|---|---|
| Device and regional availability | Version and rollout vary. Huawei’s October 2026 support guidance says HarmonyOS 7 upgrades are currently limited to mainland China. | Availability depends on the particular device, market, and software release; the cited Huawei materials do not provide a device-by-device comparison with Android or iOS. |
| Apps and services | Huawei promotes an ecosystem of apps and services, but the headline ecosystem count does not establish that every specific app a user needs is available on every HarmonyOS device. | Check the app and service directly for the device and region you plan to use. The cited sources do not establish a neutral, like-for-like app catalog comparison. |
| Working across devices | Huawei describes distributed, multi-device connectivity as part of HarmonyOS NEXT’s design and positioning. | How devices work together depends on the specific products and services. The cited materials do not support a neutral feature-by-feature verdict against Android or iOS. |
Huawei’s [HarmonyOS NEXT announcement](https://www.huawei.com/en/news/2024/10/harmonyos-next-launch) describes its cross-device approach. It should be read as Huawei’s account of its own platform, not as independent proof of superiority.

What do Huawei’s HarmonyOS ecosystem figures mean?
In its support FAQ, Huawei reported that as of September 7, 2026, HarmonyOS 6 and 7 terminal devices exceeded 85 million. Huawei says that count includes phones, tablets, and PCs. The same FAQ reported more than 400,000 available apps and services. These are Huawei-published figures; “apps and services” should not be read as 400,000 standalone native phone apps.
Huawei’s June 12, 2026 developer-beta announcement separately reported more than 1.1 million registered developers and more than 66 million HarmonyOS 6 terminal devices. Those numbers refer to that announcement’s date and stated population; the later September FAQ’s more-than-85-million figure combines HarmonyOS 6 and 7 terminal devices. Huawei’s 2024 NEXT figure of more than 15,000 native apps and meta-services uses different wording and is historical, so it is not a direct like-for-like measure against the later apps-and-services total.

What should you check before choosing a HarmonyOS device?
- Confirm the model and market. Check the exact device’s regional product and support information rather than assuming a software upgrade or feature is available everywhere.
- Confirm the installed or offered HarmonyOS version. Release announcements, developer SDK dates, and consumer-device rollouts are different things.
- Check the apps and services you rely on. Verify availability and operation on that exact device in your region; an ecosystem-wide total does not confirm support for a particular app.
- Test the device workflow you care about. If you expect a phone, tablet, PC, or accessory to work together, confirm support for the specific models and features.
- Use Huawei’s current support channel for upgrade eligibility. Huawei directs users to model-specific support information, and its HarmonyOS 7 regional guidance is explicitly current-status wording rather than a permanent promise.
For example, Huawei’s [FreeBuds Pro 5 compatibility guidance](https://consumer.huawei.com/en/support/content/en-us16000305/) says the earbuds can pair with Bluetooth devices including HarmonyOS, Android, and iOS devices, while distinguishing some platform-specific companion-app and ecosystem features. This illustrates why basic compatibility should not be confused with identical feature support across platforms.

The official materials cited here identify HarmonyOS as Huawei’s platform and describe its relationship to OpenHarmony, but they do not establish a definitive Android APK compatibility statement for every HarmonyOS generation or device. Do not assume APK support from the HarmonyOS name alone; verify the exact version and model with current technical documentation.
