A crypto debit or prepaid card generally spends value you have already supplied, while a crypto credit card uses an issuer’s credit line and is repaid later. In either case, the card program may convert crypto to fiat before a transaction is paid through the card network; the exact timing, fees, and account protections depend on the product and country.
What’s the difference between a crypto prepaid card and a credit card?
The key difference is where the money for the purchase comes from. With a prepaid or debit-style crypto card, you spend funds you have loaded or otherwise made available to the program. With a credit card, the issuer lends you money for the purchase and you repay the balance later. A card that earns crypto rewards can still be a conventional credit card; rewards in crypto do not mean the purchase itself was funded with crypto.
Crypto.com describes the distinction as spending funds already held versus using credit for purchases in its crypto card and credit card explainer. The label “debit” should not be taken to mean the card necessarily draws directly from a conventional bank deposit account. Some programs use a prepaid balance, crypto collateral, or another funding arrangement.
| Feature | Crypto prepaid or debit-style card | Crypto credit card |
|---|---|---|
| Source of purchase funds | Value already loaded or assigned to the card program; some programs may use crypto collateral or a liquidity arrangement. | An issuer’s credit line. |
| When you pay | Funds are drawn from the available balance or associated funding arrangement as transactions are made. | You repay the issuer later under the card’s billing terms. |
| Crypto’s role | Crypto may be converted to fiat at top-up or around the time of purchase, depending on the program. | Crypto may be a rewards currency; the purchase is funded with borrowed money unless the product terms say otherwise. |
| Merchant payment | The card network generally processes a fiat payment; the cardholder’s crypto funding does not by itself mean the merchant receives crypto. | The merchant is paid through the card network, while the cardholder owes the issuer. |
How do crypto card transactions work?
A typical crypto-funded purchase has two distinct sides: how the cardholder funds it and how the merchant is paid. The customer may provide crypto or use a balance connected to crypto, but the merchant’s payment is generally handled in fiat through the card network. Mastercard says crypto is converted to fiat before it reaches its network in its crypto card program overview.

- You make a purchase. The card program checks the available balance, collateral, or credit line and authorizes the transaction under its rules.
- The program applies its funding and conversion process. For a prepaid or debit-style card, it may use fiat already on the card, convert crypto at top-up, or convert crypto when a purchase is made. A credit card instead draws on the issuer’s credit line.
- The card network and merchant process payment. The merchant generally receives fiat through the normal card-payment flow, not the customer’s cryptocurrency directly.
- The transaction is finalized. The amount, exchange rate, fees, and final posting may depend on the program’s processing and settlement rules.
These are general mechanics, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same authorization, conversion, or settlement sequence. Mastercard also describes optional stablecoin settlement in select markets. That is a network or program settlement feature, not evidence that an ordinary cardholder’s purchase is paid to the merchant in stablecoins.
When does the card convert my crypto to fiat?
There are two common possibilities: conversion when you top up or assign funds to the card, and conversion when you make a purchase. The cardholder agreement or fee schedule should specify which applies. It should also identify how the exchange rate is set and when it is applied. A purchase authorization date and a later settlement or posting date can differ, so the rate used may not be the rate visible when you first tap or swipe.

Before relying on a quoted crypto value, check whether the provider sets the rate at top-up, authorization, or settlement, and whether it adds a conversion fee or spread. These details can affect the fiat amount available or the effective cost of a transaction.
Does the merchant receive cryptocurrency?
Usually, a consumer’s crypto-funded card purchase does not mean the merchant receives that cryptocurrency. The card program handles the conversion or funding mechanics, while the merchant is generally paid fiat through the card network. Mastercard’s description of conversion to fiat before the transaction reaches its network illustrates that consumer funding and merchant settlement are separate steps.

There may be program-level exceptions or options in particular markets. What should you check before choosing a crypto card?
Compare the actual terms rather than relying on “crypto,” “debit,” or “credit” in the product name. Issuers, supported assets, fees, protections, and availability vary by program and jurisdiction.

Examples: why the card agreement matters
Crypto.com U.S. prepaid Visa
Crypto.com’s U.S. prepaid Visa agreement, effective September 1, 2026, identifies Community Federal Savings Bank as the issuer and states that only U.S. dollars are held on the card. It also says cryptocurrency is not held by the bank and is not FDIC-insured. Those statements apply to that agreement and U.S. product, not to crypto cards generally. Read the U.S. cardholder agreement for the applicable terms.
Binance Global Card refunds
Binance’s Global Card support page, updated September 25, 2026, says refunds are typically processed to the Funding Account in USDC within 30 business days and that purchase fees are not refunded. This is a provider-specific example, not a general refund rule; check the terms for the card and region you use. See Binance Global Card refund information.
