Match the TV’s motion setting to the problem: turn motion smoothing off to test for the soap-opera effect, adjust blur reduction for fuzzy movement, and adjust judder reduction for uneven pans. The setting names and menu paths vary by TV model, picture mode, and input.
Identify the motion problem first
- Motion blur: a moving subject looks fuzzy or indistinct.
- Judder: movement looks rough or uneven, often during a pan or zoom. Samsung explains that judder can occur when a program or movie has fewer frames than the TV displays.
- Soap-opera effect: film motion looks unusually smooth, often because the TV is adding motion interpolation. Samsung notes that many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second and are not intended to be viewed with motion-smoothing features enabled.
These symptoms can overlap, but many TVs provide separate controls for blur and judder. Make one change at a time and replay the same scene so you can tell what helped.
Try the fix that matches what you see
If movies look too smooth
Turn motion smoothing off as a diagnostic. If the soap-opera look goes away, motion interpolation was contributing to it. You can leave smoothing off or try a lower/custom setting if you still want some motion adjustment.
If moving objects look fuzzy
Find the TV’s blur control and adjust it gradually while replaying a moving scene. Samsung calls this Blur Reduction; LG calls it De-Blur in the cited manual. The manufacturer documentation does not prescribe a universal slider value.

If pans or zooms look uneven
Adjust the judder control gradually. Samsung calls it Judder Reduction; LG calls it De-Judder. More smoothing may make movement look more even, but it can also make film motion look artificially smooth. Choose the level that looks right to you.
Find the motion setting on your TV
Samsung TVs
- Open Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Auto Motion Plus Settings. On some models, this is called Picture Clarity Settings.
- Select Off to test whether motion smoothing is causing the soap-opera effect, or choose Custom to expose available adjustments.
- In Custom mode, adjust Blur Reduction for fuzzy movement and Judder Reduction for uneven movement. Some models also offer LED Clear Motion.
Samsung’s picture-setting names and availability can differ by model. Its Auto Motion Plus support page describes the controls; its picture settings reference lists Picture Clarity options.

LG TVs
On supported models, look for TruMotion in picture options or picture clarity. The cited LG manual describes Off, Smooth, Clear, and User modes. In User mode, De-Judder adjusts judder and De-Blur reduces blur.
For the 2022 webOS interface described by LG, the path is All Settings > Picture > Advanced Settings > Clarity > TruMotion. LG notes that, in the configuration described on its support page, TruMotion cannot be changed when Game Mode is selected. See the LG TruMotion instructions and your model’s manual. Options vary by model and input.

If the setting is missing or unavailable
- Check the selected picture mode and input; some controls are not available in every combination.
- On LG, check whether Game Mode is enabled. The cited 2022 webOS guidance says this prevents TruMotion adjustment in its described setup.
- Consult the support page or manual for your exact model if the menu labels or path differ. The Samsung and LG paths above do not apply to every TV brand or model.
Adjust without trading one problem for another
There is no manufacturer-supported universal slider value in the cited guidance. Start with the setting for the symptom you notice, change it in small steps, and judge the result using the same scene. If reducing judder makes a movie look too smooth, back the setting down; if blur remains, test the blur control separately. LED or backlight motion options are distinct controls where available, and the cited documentation does not establish them as the right fix for every blur complaint.
