On a Pixel, open Settings > System > About phone > Android version. That screen shows your Android version and the Android security patch level. To check for an available update, use the separate Settings > System > Software update screen.
Find your Android version and security patch level
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then About phone.
- Scroll to and tap Android version.
- Read the Android version and Android security patch level entries.
Google documents this Pixel route as System > About phone > Android version. Menu labels can vary slightly by Android version. If you do not see the same path, search Settings for “Android version.”
Make sure you are reading the right update field
The Android security patch level is different from the Google Play system update date. Android lists these as separate entries, along with the Android version, Android security update, and build number. If you want to check the device’s Android security patch, read that specific field rather than the Google Play system update entry. Google’s Android instructions identify these fields separately.
Check whether a Pixel update is available
- Open Settings > System > Software update.
- Check the status shown and follow any on-screen instructions.
Checking the installed patch level and checking for an update are separate tasks: the first tells you what is installed; the second checks update availability. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and depend on the device and carrier, so an update may not appear on every phone at the same time. Google’s Pixel update guidance explains the rollout.

Know whether your Pixel model is still supported
Google’s update-support policy is model-specific. Its current policy, accessed in 2026, provides:
| Pixel models | OS and security update policy |
|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US |
| Pixel Fold and the listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation models | Five years |
| Pixel 5a and earlier listed models | No longer receive Android version or security updates |
Check your exact model against Google’s Pixel update-support policy; do not assume another model’s support window applies to your phone.
