LEGO publishes specific rules for connecting LEGO and DUPLO pieces. For other brands, check the exact parts and the manufacturer’s compatibility claim; the available evidence does not establish a reliable brand-by-brand ranking.
How LEGO System bricks fit together
LEGO describes its connection as studs engaging the tubes and walls inside another brick. The studs wedge between those internal features, creating the hold LEGO calls “clutch power.” It is a designed connection: the shape and dimensions of both pieces affect how firmly they hold and how readily they separate. Matching a nominal stud pattern alone does not establish that two parts will perform identically.
In LEGO’s company history, the LEGO Group says Godtfred Kirk Christiansen worked on a solution to improve stability and that the combined stud-and-tube design creates clutch power. The company says it filed a patent application for a toy building element on January 28, 1958. Which LEGO and DUPLO pieces connect?
LEGO says the two systems connect in specified configurations, not in every combination. Its guidance gives these rules:

- Only LEGO pieces with an even number of studs are compatible with DUPLO pieces. LEGO gives 2×2 and 2×4 bricks as examples that fit; 1×2 and 2×3 bricks do not.
- LEGO bricks fit on DUPLO bricks when the DUPLO bricks have hollow studs on top.
- LEGO figures and DUPLO figures do not fit each other’s bricks.

What “LEGO-compatible” says—and what it doesn’t
A third-party “LEGO-compatible” claim is a starting point, not proof that every part from that brand fits every LEGO part or produces the same clutch. To evaluate a particular combination, separate three questions:

- Do the parts physically connect? Check the exact stud pattern, receiving tubes or openings, and the shape of the pieces.
- Do they hold and separate as needed? A connection may be possible but unsuitable for a build that needs a firm hold, easy disassembly, or repeated play.
- Does the manufacturer support that exact combination? Look for compatibility information that covers the specific product or parts, rather than relying only on a broad label.
Consider the intended use, too: a display model, a play build, and a structurally demanding model may place different demands on a connection. The sources available here do not provide a current, controlled comparison of clutch strength across manufacturers or establish which currently sold third-party brands reliably fit every LEGO System part. BrickLink’s stud-dimensions guidance also notes that its dimension system does not apply to every catalog part and that some LEGO product lines use different sizes. That is a scope caveat, not a third-party brand test.

The LEGO Group’s Responsibility Report 2016 describes scheduled inspection of moulded bricks and dimensional measurement. It states, “Its tolerance will be measured to within 4/1000mm.” This is a figure reported by LEGO in that 2016 document about its described quality process—not a current independent measurement and not a measurement of third-party parts. It should not be used to infer that a compatible brick from another manufacturer meets the same tolerance.

A practical way to check a specific combination
- Identify the parts and systems. Note the exact LEGO part and third-party part, including their shapes and connection surfaces; a shared stud grid does not settle every interface.
- Check the maker’s stated scope. Confirm whether its claim covers the particular parts or product line, rather than assuming it applies universally.
- Assess the connection for your use. If you have the pieces, check whether they connect, hold, and separate acceptably for the build. Do not assume a result for one pair applies to other parts.
- Use a narrower conclusion when evidence is limited. If the manufacturer does not specify the combination and no part-specific evidence is available, treat compatibility as unverified rather than guaranteed.
