First identify the TV’s make and model, save your Wi-Fi password and account logins, and try a restart if you are troubleshooting a temporary freeze or connection problem.
Before you reset: try a restart and save your sign-ins
A restart can clear a temporary problem without erasing stored settings. For a Samsung TV, turn it off, unplug it for about a minute, plug it back in, and turn it on; Samsung says this does not erase data. For an unresponsive Google TV device, Google recommends unplugging it for one minute before reconnecting it. TCL advises Android TV owners to restart, check for updates, and troubleshoot the specific issue before using a factory reset. - Write down the Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Make sure you know the passwords for your TV-platform account and streaming services.
- Note any picture, sound, parental-control, accessibility, or input settings you customized.
- If you use an antenna, be prepared to scan for channels again if the reset removes channel configuration.
A factory reset is not the same as a restart: it restores some or all settings to their original state and can remove apps, network information, account sign-ins, preferences, or other data. The exact scope depends on the TV and the reset option. For example, Samsung’s US instructions distinguish a full TV reset from a Smart Hub reset, while its UK guidance describes a full reset as removing smart-TV data and downloaded apps. Check the instructions for your exact model and region before confirming.
Reset a Samsung smart TV
Samsung’s US support page describes this path for supported models. Menu labels and options vary by model and software version; if these steps do not match your TV, consult its manual or Samsung’s support page.

- Return to the TV’s main settings interface. The reset option may be unavailable while an app such as Netflix or YouTube is open.
- Open Settings > General & Privacy > Reset.
- Enter the PIN. Samsung lists 0000 as the default PIN.
- Select Reset and confirm when prompted.
If that route is missing, Samsung says to look under Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis. Its UK support page instead lists Home > Settings > General > Reset and notes that menus vary by location and software version. If the issue is limited to Samsung apps and connected services, picture, or sound, check whether Reset Smart Hub, picture reset, or sound reset is more appropriate than resetting the whole TV. Reset a TCL Roku TV
On a TCL Roku TV, the menu route is Home > Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Factory reset everything. Follow the confirmation prompts. TCL says this removes downloaded apps or channels, Roku account sign-in, Wi-Fi information, and picture, audio, and input settings. TCL Roku TV reset instructions
If you cannot open Settings
Some TCL Roku TV models have a recessed physical RESET button. TCL says to hold it for about 10–20 seconds while the TV is powered on; a paper clip can reach a pinhole button. Confirm your model’s button location and instructions first—this button is not present on every TV.

Set it up again
After the reset, select a language, connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, sign in to Roku, and reinstall channels as needed.
Reset a TCL Android TV
TCL’s Android TV route is Home > Settings > More Settings (if shown) > Device Preferences > Reset > Factory data reset > Factory data reset > Erase everything. Menu names can differ by model and software version. The TV should restart to its initial setup screen. TCL says the reset permanently removes downloaded apps, Google accounts, Wi-Fi information, app logins, picture and sound settings, parental controls, and customized preferences. If Settings will not open
TCL recommends a 60-second power reset first. If the TV remains frozen during startup or its menus are inaccessible, look up recovery instructions using the full model number or contact TCL support. Do not try a reset-button combination intended for a different model; recovery steps vary.
Complete initial setup
After the TV restarts, set the language and region, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to Google, reinstall apps, sign in to streaming services, and restore picture, sound, and accessibility preferences.

Google TV and other smart TVs
Google’s guidance applies to Google TV devices generally, not as a universal menu path for every television. Google recommends restarting an unresponsive device before a factory reset and says manual reset steps vary by manufacturer. A factory reset deletes everything on the device and requires apps and content to be downloaded again. For Google TV built into a television, use that TV maker’s instructions; do not assume a Chromecast button procedure applies. Google TV Help: Fix an unresponsive Google TV device
For other brands and platforms, use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. Menu names and reset behavior can change between models, software versions, and regions, so a generic button sequence is not a reliable substitute.
If the reset option is missing or the TV still has a problem
- The reset option is missing: Exit any streaming app and return to the TV’s settings interface. Then check the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model.
- Only the network is failing: On supported Samsung TVs, try the Network Status test or Smart Hub Connection Test before erasing the TV’s settings.
- The TV is frozen: Try the platform’s recommended restart first. If menus remain inaccessible, use only recovery steps published for your model.
- The reset does not finish or the error returns: Contact the manufacturer and provide the model number and any error message on screen. TCL advises model-specific recovery guidance when Android TV menus cannot be reached.
